Is it okay to remove heat shield?
I have a 2007 G35 S sedan. It’s been making a terrible and embarrassing rattling noise for some time now. My neighbor checked it and said it was the heat shield that had probably gotten a little loose and said he could remove it. I just wanted to make sure if that was okay to do or if there was another solution?
Im pushing 250k miles, so I’m not trying to invest too much more money into it if possible. Thanks |
I'm going to jump on a limb and ASSUME you're talking about the heat shields on the catalytic converters and not the body shielding or the exhaust header shields.
Another option that's easier is to buy a couple of large worm drive screw clamps that are typically used for duct work, unscrew them all the way and wrap them back around the cats and tighten it up. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/g35driv...a46871bf07.jpg |
I honestly don’t know much as at all about cars so I’m not sure which shield(s) it is, just basing it off what my neighbor told me when he got under there. It sounds like it’s coming from the front driver side of the car but not exactly sure.

Yes do as he says.
Without the heat shield it can catch fire on dry leaves and grass. |
What size clamps would we need approximately? I can hear mine rattling too sometimes.

I think 12" (max) diameter clamps are common enough and should work. I don't think you'd need anything larger but it's best to confirm. They can go really small, easily to half the max diameter if not more.
