But I think my headgasket is no longer doing its job, and while the rest of the car is doing pretty good, I can't be without the car for the time it would take to do the work myself, and it's not worth dropping the $ on replacement engine or labor on the headgasket work.

This would indeed be sad. I read your other post. Any sign of foam in the oil?

I honestly haven't checked the oil yet, I feel like at 177,000 miles now, it's going to be chasing repairs from here out, and if it was a toy, I'd work on it in my spare time, but I need it for reliable transportation.

Trade in value is a laughable $200, so we'll see what I can do parting it out. I guess there'll be a DDin kit and other harder to find parts going cheap soon.

I would keep it as a toy and work on it if someone offered me $200

If I had space and time, I would too.

It will be sad to see you go, you've always been a big help around here.

Any particular vehicle in mind to replace the G35?

I ended up getting a Chevy Volt. Plug-in Hybrid works perfectly for me. Some of the options even at the top trim level confuse me - no power seat? no automatic wipers? - but it feels pretty good, and especially in sport mode, that instant torque kicks in fantastically.

Going from 6MT to "no" gears is interesting too. The bose system in the volt is a step up from the bose that came in our cars, but I'll probably be figuring out a way to get a better subwoofer in here, I'm definitely missing some of the low frequencies.

Thank you for your decades of service to the AVE section here on the forum! I like the Chevy volt, very hard to find on the used market. Extremely affordable car to commute in, especially compared to a G :).

maybe you can keep the sub simple with one of those under seat mounted ones 😅. For all I know, you’ll be pulling interior panels out soon to start hyper miling!

I've already looked into replacing the subwoofer. Crutchfield says "electrical system of hybrid too fragile, NO TOUCHY WITH AMPLIFIERS!" but it's got a standard 12v battery in it, not just a baby 12v in there. I thought it was a decent system, but when I moved my G around and the sound kicked in, it reminded me that the volt's bose system is definitely lacking.

I could live with it, yes, but is that really living?

Depends who you ask, lol!

Such as, like me! Congenital nerve deafness from birth, two hearing aids, lip reading... and definitely not able to parse lyrics in music. (Radio Paradise lyrics window has been a godsend and solved a lot of mysteries and misinterpretations!) To me, the vocals are just another instrument above the bass line's "boondy, boondy, boondy" (which frequencies are closest to normal for me). Higher frequencies are gone ridiculously early.

No audio upgrades being pursued here!!

If the bass is the best heard part, that's even more reason to make it great (not just louder)!

Drum solo!

Nice to see some old timers still hanging around...

I've still got a decent amount of knowledge, particularly in the A/V area for these cars that I figure shouldn't go to waste, so I'll be around a bit... but the board just isn't as busy as it was years ago, so I've just been lurking every few days instead of every hour like it used to be.

Taking out the audio equipment brought back memories, for sure. There were a few "why did I think this was a great install?" on a few wires and mounts, but they did hold up for a decade so, good enough?

The speaker spacers for the front are a bit spongy from being exposed to water that went down between the glass and the door. I might model something up real quick and make available as a 3D model or printed for anyone else going into the doors.

Wish I was closer, would love to get the whole car from you, the wife would love to drive that thing. Maybe Pennsylvania isn’t too far of a drive. . . . .
