Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
Before Infiniti gotten smarter and increased the wheel and tire package, it should of been a no brainer to purchase the 18"s wheel and tires package. How I break it down is that the price on the tire difference alone from the Sports pilots and Goodyears RS-A are almost $150 for each tire, so if you add the 4, that would be $600, now that alone covers for the tires, then you pretty much get the 18"s wheels and ( limited rear slip differentials ) for free. To me, you can't go wrong with this package. The only plus that I can think of for not upgrading is for the ride comfort of the 17"s. What do you guys think ?

i too concur with your thinking. for me, i had no choice since i wanted my car right away back in november and the exact exterior color and interior was in stock at the dealer.

It snows here, and I figured i would pick up nice 18"s later, and use the 17"s in the winter.

the car I wanted was there.. zero mile (well 6) and ready to go.. My wife says to me, "wont you just buy aftermarket wheels next year, even if you had 18's?" I do love that woman :) We drove both and my wife really doesnt like the sports car ride.. The 17's was a nice compromise for us. When we got done driving the coupe with 18's, she said it was way to harsh for her. However, she actually liked the 17's ride. I plan to use the 17's for snow tires or AutoX tires. I doubt she'll like those 19's I plan to get :) I miss the LSD.. but honestly, I'd rather have the Quife. The pref package is a great deal. Cant argue that. http://www.adpub.com/tim/g/slip.gif bs g35c lth/prem |
Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
oh, and from having a maxima, I know that chrome silver finish on the 18's is extremely hard to maintain, or even flakes off/discolors for no good reason. I *really* didnt want to deal with that. I knew they couldnt be touched up (practically).
So, I wasnt really sold on *those* 18's.. Miss the Pilots and LSD tho :) http://www.adpub.com/tim/g/slip.gif bs g35c lth/prem |
Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
I've been looking for one without the 18" tires since it snows in Minnesota. However, it seems like the majority of the coupes on dealer lots here got those 18" tires. I guess it sounds like they are a decent deal, but I'd rather have the winter traction and better ride comfort. I don't know, to me 17" wheels are plenty big.

I think the W&T package may be the best package for this car. Best looking 18s I've seen on any stock car, some of the best performing tires out there, and those badass brembos. And the price is awesome (and even cheaper for us 6mt folks).

Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
belive it or not some people like the look of the 17s over the 18s(my father).

Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
my dad likes the look of the 17s also.. honeslty, i think they look pretti decent when looked at an angle.. they have the look of volk TE37, but when you look at them straight on, they jus look bleh..
like some of the others, i had no choice, but to get the 17s because of availability at the time.. if i had more patience, i would have waited for one with the performance package.. oh wells, picking up my 18" volk te37 w/ s-03s this weekend :) btw.. if anybody wants the 17"s, give me a PM.. the rims/tires are still on my car (about 1500 mi), but like i said, will get rid of the new rims this weekend.. sorri for the self advertisment there :P --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://home.comcast.net/~dhliu/demonhunter.gif |
Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
I did not have a choice on the 17's. It was a spur of the moment thing. The dealer had what I wanted (the car) and all the other options I wanted on it. One plus of the 17's that I like is the:
1) softer ride 2) higher treadlife on tires 3) lower cost replacements 4) Brake jobs on the brembos I thought would be more expensive than the regular brakes. 5) I knew I was going to get 19's or 20's so I figure that I could save the $600 for new rims! Other than that, it would have made more sense for me to get the 18's! |
Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
The Performance Wheel package is an outstanding value, but there are reasons not to get it:
1. 17s accelerate and brake slightly faster than 18s (with equal tires). 2. You can get away with using RS-A's in the snow, but not Pilots. 3. Much better selection of tires at 17" dimensions. Gotta replace them some day, and you might want snows. 4. Slightly more forgiving ride. 5. You were planning on buying aftermarket wheels anyway (and since most people start with 18s, there's a bigger market to sell the 17" stocks). 6. NO UGLY SILVER SPRAYPAINT ON THE DASH! Personally, the only reason I would get the wheel package is for the LSD. I would really, really like to have that, and the whole package combined is much cheaper than adding an aftermarket LSD by itself. But since they had my exact car without the package on the lot that day, and one with the package would take 4 months to arrive, the choice was made easy for me. -Jack Obsidian '03 G35 Sports Coupe Titanium '03 MX-5 Shinsen #532 |
Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
For those people who don't like the harsh ride of the Pilots... the 17's are a good way to settle. They don't grip as well as the pilots but give a more forgiving ride. During my youth I didn't mind getting bounced around.. Now I need a little more comfort.

Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
It is funny how people go on and on in this forum about having to have manual transmissions, cold air intakes etc., etc, to make it a "real sports car;" but then don't want the 18" wheels & Mich. pilot sport tires & LSD??? And at a bargin price??????.
I agree with the original poster.... why wouldn't anyone want the perf. tire & wheel package (and i'll add) on a "sports car." |
Re: Why wouldn't everyone upgrade 17" to 18" at dealer
JDMan, that's not necessarily true regarding acceleration and braking. True, 18" wheels are bigger and heavier and have more rolling mass, but usually if 17" and 18" wheels are both from the manufacturer, then it doesn't affect the performance of the vehicle.
For all 6MT owners, our car comes with the 18" wheels and limited-slip differential. As I understand it, the G35C 5AT 17" wheels do not fit over our Brembo brakes. Personally, I prefer the 18" wheels for several reasons. First, I think the bigger wheels give the car a more aggressive stance. The bigger performance tires provide better performance, and finally, I really think the 18" stock rims look amazing. The ride is very jarring and we have to be careful with curbs and potholes and stuff, but I feel they're worth it. Whether anyone prefers the 17's or the 18's, I respect your opinion. |

In reply to:

It is funny how people go on and on

well, I like to road trips... There's really that much difference. Pretty sure I would even swap back to 17's from aftermarket rims (when I get them) just to take a long road trip. Actually, had the car been there with 18's, I would have taken it just to sell/trade them for 17's.. I would have had LSD, 17's and cash in pocket. I would have grown to love the silver dash... Not.. :) http://www.adpub.com/tim/g/slip.gif bs g35c lth/prem |
