Pointing to the turn signal stalk....

How come my car doesn't have the headlight levelers when my turn signal stalk has that symbol that it does?

Just had a look at my turn signal stalk and it looks like the inner symbol (upper one) with 2 big arrows one pointing either way shows the indicator direction for L & R. The other symbol that shows a headlight with 2 smaller arrows one forward, one back is for the Hi-Beam control: move the lever forward for Hi and back for Low. Just the way I see it.
As far as I know there are headlight adjusters hidden in and around the headlights but supposedly inaccessable except for dealers. I haven't had a chance to find them yet.........Hope this helps...

I dont understand the need for adjusting your headlights. I mean if they are not level, sure i understand. But how could they come out of alightment so fast?

The majority of them must be ok. There was one guy asking about the adjusters here recently tho, and yet another some time ago saying the manufacturer was going to try to make them inaccessable with covers.
I believe that they are adjusted very conservatively from the factory: (low end of the scale) A lot of guys, including myself, prefer a setting that is a little more aggressive ( a touch higher) STILL WITHIN SPEC but higher. These HID's are very bright and need to be adjusted properly.
Further to that, on a trip where the car is fully loaded, it's necessary to readjust the lights down to compensate. You don't want to go to the dealer every time for that. No doubt he'd charge 1/2 to 1 hr labour. But with a little care and common sense, you could do it youself for nothing.

what the manual adjusters are, for varying road and vehicle conditions.

On an upward incline, you may want to raise the beam.

On a downward incline, you may want to lower the beam

If you say, have a full load in the car and trunk, as you noticed many of the cars' rear suspension took the load the front is now higher than the rear, thus the headlight aim. Then you want to lower the beam.

In Europe, regulations for HIDs call for automatic levelers and headlight washers.

many MK4 Golf/Jetta owners have retrofitted the headlight leveling motor and switch to their cars (using the European headlight assemblies).

For example here's the switch that would go on my car.

Nothing like that on ours but I like the idea. When things warm up a little here, I'll get in the garage and see what I can find.

Mine were not level when my vehicle was delivered. The driver's side was aimed about 3 inches higher than the passenger's side at a distance of 8 feet away. That's pretty noticable from a few car lengths.

Ahh ok thanks guys, I understand now. I guess i have never driven underconditions to where ive noticed my lights to be aiming to high or low.
