Pure Definition of Stealership....PART 2 of why my car wouldn't start

Before I start, let me mention that the service rep helping me was a class act, superior service. So my radio had an "open circuit" and kept running when my car was off causing it to not start. Replacement cost with labor was quoted at 530, after the diagnostics test was done($115) the tech told me I need new drive belts, heavy cracking. So I went in there for final quote she comes out with $900???? I WAS LIKE WTF?

Anyways, she said let me find some magic coupons and see what I can do? I was like hhah thanks. Brought it down to $707.26. Still a rip off but O well.

end Rant/

I AlSO NEED NEW 19" TIRES....being broke college student FTL

Let me get this straight.... New belts cost you $700 bucks?... You are kidding me right???

You can buy your belts at NAPA and do it yourself for less than $150.... It only take 1.5 to 2 hrs max!

If I was quoted $900 I would have fallen outta my chair laughing and then politely asked for my keys and left... I would not even wait around for the second quote using those "magic coupons" ... I don't believe how many people get taken at the dealership service centers...

A good rule of thum is to price out the belts you would need on your own, then look up the amount of time it takes to complete the job... plenty of manuals on-line to give you an estimate... Then take the hours invloved and (i'll be nice) multiply that by $89.00 for labor... I cant believe the going rate is $89 / hour to work on a friggn car... My friggn psych is less than that for cryn out loud...

Wow.... just wow :icon22:

My best advice is get hooked up with your local G club. Our group, chicagoz.com, is who I turn to if I need help with something which is pretty much always because I suck mechanically. Whenever anyone in the group needs something done there are ALWAYS 3-4 + people willing to help out. I'm sure most groups would be like this.

NAPA A/C BELT- $18.46 NAPA P/S ALT. BELT- $19.82= 38.28 so, forty bux and an hour and half and your good to go. your other repairs must not have been under warranty.....

Haha, I wish it was still $89 around here. I go to New Jersey and the hour of labor was $110 months ago. I had my belts changed at the dealership for less then $200. Oh wait, they were replacing my engine then, so maybe that's why it was cheap.

Wow...stealerships...you can never win.

filthyg35 Nov 27, 2007 11:37 AM

I had to have a belt replaced and it was 50 for the belt itself and 100 labor to install, so that should have tacked on another 150 bucks to the other things you had done...sounds right for the stealership....

Oh God please don't tell me you went to Sac Infiniti and had Kathrine as your service rep! If so I feel sorry for you, you poor soul.

sliderg35 Nov 27, 2007 12:50 PM

Holy sh!t - $100 to replace the belts??? That's like a 10 minute job and 5 minutes of that is taking off the lower engine cover. Buy the belts and do it yourself! (That $900 thing is just crazy talk. I'm not sure where the radio comes into this...)
