Are G's All What They Are Cracked Up To Be?
 

Hello everyone, new here and i must say i love this forum! :thewave:


Anyways, to my question, i am currently in the process of getting an 03 g35 coupe with all the works, navi, black leather, bose, moonroof, spoiler, pretty much everything at only 46,000 miles. It is an automatic as i dont want to deal with the hassle of a manual. Now my question is, are these cars what they are cracked up to be? In every post i see about them, there are always little things that need to be fixed on the car, and i am wondering for a college student (Im 19) is it a car that will consistently need to be repaired? The one i am getting does not have any warranty left on it, and i dont want to always have to spend my money on finicky repairs such as the window motors, fixing the rattles, gas tank issue....What does everyone else have to say, and sorry for the long read but i want to make sure i know what i am getting myself into before this happens as i plan on keeping the car for the next 4 or 5 years. :driving:

Depends how you treat her... but you will definately have the normal expenses:
Tires, breaks, rotors, bearings here and there... lots oil changes... but as long as you are prepared to make those expenses reliably and the car's previous owner(s?) took care of it you can expect it to be very reasonable.

get the car checked out fully get Carfax report, anything that needs to be changed make the dealer to change everything that needs to be changed before buying it, also see if the car had recalls done and other things. If you take care of the car it should last you for a long time with out having problems.

i am getting the car from a female and she just said that car was serviced with new tires and all at 45000 miles. I was stilling waiting to actually see the car in person but that should be this weekend.

I love my G coupe, to be honest I did have a problem with my window motor (which was fixed under warranty) but don't you think you'll be taking a chance with any car you might buy. Other than the window motor, I've had no issues. GO FOR IT!! But I'd reconsider getting a 6 speed :drivingskid:

I would never buy this car if I were that young and a student. First, even if it is reliable, any repair is expensive due to it being a luxury brand. Second, the maintenance on it is expensive -- tires run ~$1200 every 15k-20k and a tranny flush is around ~$300!

Do yourself a HUGE favor and get something easy and worry free until you graduate (like a Civic).

Why live life when all youre doing is taking the safe route? But thats just me.

OP, I say get the G if its what you truly want.

I wouldn't get one in ur position. Unless you have a good paying job at the same time. Tires need to be replaced ver 11-15k on avg. Tires will run you at least $900.

Insurance for someone your age is off the roof. I would say $200+ a month. The car is gas friendly either. And since your over the warranty period. You'll gonna have to pay for something that "Might" come up.

Window motor, door actuator, radio failure, etc etc..

So do the math.

Depending on how you drive. some people get 20k plus out of their tires. I am 17 am am getting a G as soon as I get my grades up mo my parents can sign for me(even though i am paying). I was quoted for $317 a month with philly insurance and a clean record. So yes, unless you have a good paying job I suggest you just save up.

Also since you are young, learn how to fix/keep up on your car. It will save you thousands in the long run. Just a little advice. There was a thrread with how much people spent and you should have seen some of the labor figures. Some $10k+.

This was discussed in that other potential owner thread (there seems to be 10 of these threads appearing every day), and the general consensus is that you can get significantly more than 15k on a set of tires, even the stock ones. The only way you'd be getting <15k is if you drive like a bat out of hell every single time you get in your car.

The problem isn't the tires. The problem is the suspension on the G35 and 350Z. Causing abnormal and premature wear. (Feathering, cupping) etc... Driving with abnormal wear is dangerous, especially after 15k... You want to risk it go ahead.

You can see that there are treads left after 15k but is it safe?

UPDATE: A Class Action Suit Has Recently Been Filed Against Nissan For "Tire Feathering" and "Tire Roar" in the 2003 and 2004 Nissan 350z!

Still waiting for the G35.. Same with the oil issue.

+1 I'm in college and bought it my freshman year( an 06 ). Never regret the decision..

Regardless of what causes tire wear, I think it's giving people an inaccurate picture to say you can only get 15k miles safely on a set of tires. The G35 isn't some exotic vehicle, I see about 10 of them every time I go out and I doubt all those people need to switch tires every half a year.
