G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

Everyone,

I need your help. Another regular poster on this forum and I have been Instant Messaging each other about tire pressure. This individual has decided to take the maximum tire pressure on the side wall of the tire, 51 psi, and fill their tires to that level.

I told the individual that the 17" wheels should be filled to 32 psi, and the 18" wheels should be filled to 35 psi. I also stated that there is a sticker on the drivers side door jam that states maximum load that the vehicle can carry along with tire air pressure.

I believe that the 51 psi is for when the vehicle is at MAXIMUM capacity and the tires are extremely hot. If the tires were ran at 51 psi for too long the center of the tire should wear very quickly. Also, traction would be minimized. If the tire pressures fell below 30-ish the tires would start to wear on the outer edges.

If anyone agrees with this, please post below as to clear up any confusion one might have about proper tire pressures.

TIA

Re: G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

today my dad had the winter tires switched for the regular set and the shop checked the tread depth and it was close to being too little to be legal. The tires have just over 10k miles on them and they are shot. Sounds kinda like the deal with the 350z and their camber problems eating tires. Is the g35c know to have similar problems being closely related and all? The only other explanation was they were overinflated at the oil change place judging by where the wear has occured. The tread it worst in the center of the tire, not the edges so much. What could have caused that pattern of wear on a set of tires with as much use as these?

Re: G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

You've gotta be kidding. The pressure stamped on the sidewall is for maximum pressure for that tire, not for the car it's on. The manufacturer researches, tests, tests some more, then checks all of their tests again to find the correct pressure for the tire on that specific car, with certain wheels, and suspension components. So the Pilot Sports will probably have a different recommended pressure on a vehicle other than the G.

It's kinda like the redline on your engine. Yeah that's the max but if you run your car at redline all the time you will seriously decrease the life of the engine. It's worse with the tires though because not only will you decrease their life they are unsafe when not properly filled.

The proper pressure with OEM tires and rims is printed on the door.

I would be careful about taking any advice from this "individual".

35 psi stock for the coupe, but you may find 34 front/33 back cold sticks a bit better. 51? yikes, I want pics after 10K. The centre of the tire will be gone. If said individual survives 10K, with so little tire actually touching the ground. Pretty sure that would effectively halve the contact patch.

Re: G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

Tell your friend to only go by the manufacturer's recommended tire pressures which can be found on the sticker in the door opening.
If he runs 51 PSI, he's asking for trouble.
Last I looked at the Sedan, it was 30 PSI all around, and my Coupe calls for 35 PSI all around.
You can go a few pounds either way to taste, but no more.

Re: G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

I hope your friend is ready to hydroplane... Correct tire pressure plays a big role in your ability to drive in bad weather.

Is the pressure being set to 51 cold? If so, ask the individual to go for a spiritied drive and then check the pressure. And then read the sidewall again. The pressure will be over the maximum allowed limit for the tires.

Re: G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

Neffster pointed this out to me. I overfilled the tires. I checked as soon as I got to the car after our IMs to each other. I'm glad I only rode around for a day on them like that.

Neff, I just wanted to let you know I have no problem being wring here, I'd rather be wrong and get good advice than be right (or stubborn) and pay the consequences later. Thansk for pointing it out.

Re: G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

Sounds a little high.....From what I understand, you should keep the pressures close to what the manufacturer suggests despite the size difference.

Re: G35 Tire Pressure/Safety

Neffster
Your words were kind to the individual your PMing with...
But he' wrong.....
like everyone has stated...the tire pressure, (correct for our car), is in the manual and on the drivers side door jam...

Over inflating will give a much harder ride as well as wearing the tires more on the middle of the tire (due to the high pressure) Also...if your inflating the tires to 51lbs cold...the operating temperature of the tire will increase the pressure considerably..

Ask any reputable tire dealer or installer and they will tell you the same....
By the way...many automobile makers ship their cars with higher pressure in the tires for tie down purposes....
I would think 33-35lbs would be acceptable for everyday driving....2old4this
