Most of the people I know who own stock 4.6 V8 Mustang 5-speeds don't get better fuel economy than us(quite a bit worse actually), despite the fact that their cars are lighter than ours, and geared much taller.
True though that Corvettes get better economy than us when driven lightly, but look how much torque they have, how light they are and how obnoxiously tall they are geared, as well as how streamlined that car is.
Truth be told.... our cars could use to be geared a little bit taller for highway cruising, but that would sacrifice acceleration(depending on if they just increased the 6th gear ratio, or if they opted to lower the final drive ratio). I would love to have my 6th gear be something like .70 instead of .79... which would mean that on the highway if you shifted from 5th to 6th gear at 65 MPH, your revs would drop from 3000 RPM to about 2100 RPM during that shift compared to our real-world gearing right now which drops you from 3000 RPM's to about 2380..... or at 80 MPH in 6th gear, we could be doing just under 2600 RPM's instead of the just over 2900 RPM's that we spin right now... which probably means about 2 more MPG on the highway.
Our engines put out plenty of power to pull that on the highway without lugging, and from what I've seen by watching my scangauge and real-time fuel economy output on my Nav in my G35..... the engine seems to operate most efficiently(in terms of economy) in the 1600-2200 RPM range.
