Gas door doesn't open (not the lock, spring maybe?)

Hey guys, I tried a search for gas door, but all I get are threads talking about the faulty locking part, which is not my problem.

The door is unlocked, but when I push on it like the manual says, it doesn't "pop" open, I have to pry it open by sticking fingernails between the body and door.

I think the following part is the part that is supposed to cause the spring open action, and it was kinda bent looking when I first got the car. (this picture was found in another thread, it not from my car, mine is not torn, but it does seem broken)

Is this the part that causes the door to spring open when you push on it, and if so, how can I replace it? Part Number?

if there is a thread for this, if you could point me in that direction I would be super thankful.

Mine never appeared spring loaded, an 05 sedan. I just push the right most side and it pivots open on the hinge.

I'll have to see if I have a broken piece like that in mine :) I recently bought so it could be defective.

Mine isn't spring loaded...i just push the far right of it near the front of the car and it pivots open

Steven, glad to see another ATX brother on here. Like everyone has said just push on the right side of the door and it'll pop open. If there's anything else I can help you with PM me and let me know.

Post more pics of your car, did you just get it?

StevenK Jul 23, 2009 11:37 AM

BTW, I was an idiot and posted in Sedan, the car is a Coupe, so from what I understand I push on the left side (towards the back of the car) instead of the the front right?

Blue Dream, pics are in the New Member thread I created a few weeks ago. Just picked it up about 3 weeks ago. If you know about the Cabellas meet in Buda I'll be there on the 1st with my thirdgen (camaro/firebird) car club, not sure if I'm bringin the G or my Z28, but if you wanna meet up that'd be cool.

sounds like the locking mechanism onthe gas cap went bad... you can access through the trunk under the lining... not sure what the cost to replcae it is.. I just ripped the plastic piece that moves so my cap can be opened at anytime. It's easier to steal my gas but i dont have to worry about anyone messing up my car if they try to steal gas... really not too worried about it the way it is.

Can you verify that the accordion thing doesn't click in and out when you push on it with the gas door open? If it doesn't (and instead just stays there pushed in) they you need to replace that part. If it does click in for one push and out for the next, etc., then it's something else. Another member had a problem with the flat surface that the accordion pushes against on the actual door. Make sure that's still intact.

I'll check that, when I first got the car, it wasn't pushed straight out, it was kinda laying at an angle, so I pushed it straight in with my hand and closed the door, but it doesn't spring back out. I'll see if I do it manually if it works. If not, does anyone know the name of that part or the part number?

I fixed mine by just breaking the lock:D. It can't lock anymore. But I don't care. I don't have to deal with the not opening sometimes bs anymore:biggthumpup:.

Okay, the lock works perfectly, lock the doors, fuel door can not be opened. Unlock the door, push on the left side of the door (towards rear of car, like manual says) and it doesn't spring open, I have to pry it open with fingernails. The rubber boot on that same side is pushed in. If I push it in with my finger it pops out, but not straight, as if its broken. Anyone have any clue what that part is called (in the picture in first post) or the part number?

check out infinitipartsonline.com, im pretty sure #13 is the springy thing even though its called the "lock". I had to replace my #12 actuator a while back, and got to talking to the guys there at infinity parts when I ordered it about the "lock". he ran over to the warehouse and pulled one and from his explanation its actually the spring.
Hope that helps.

Hey sorry to resurrect this old thread, but i was wondering if I could just get a new rubber accordion replacement grommet. Mine looks exactly like the one in this picture and I want to replace it. Does an auto part store have something generic for this? Thanks for any info.

ScreaminMeemer Jun 29, 2013 02:04 PM

StevenK, do all of your other doors and trunk open okay? I had problems opening my fuel door and found I had to press the unlock button on my remote key fob. Don't know why it happened but I learned that the fuel door operates on the same signal as your doors and trunk.

If you still can't open the gas door without using your fingernails replace the spring gizmo, they're about $15= and besides your rubber is shot anyway. Easy to replace, just pops out and you push a new one in it's place....Gary
