Keep 90k mile G or move on?
 

Hi all,

I bought my G35 about 3 years at 47k miles. It now has about 89k on it and is riddled with electrical problems. The cd player, power locks, passenger side window, and various electrical outlets are broken. Thankfully the motor and transmission havent had any problems yet. My question is this. I am starting medical school and need a car for another 4-5 years. Currently I drive about 14k mi/yr. Should I keep this car or sell it now and get something with less miles? I am just worried about future reliability.

All the problems you listed can either be DIY'd or replaced for relatively little money compared to buying another car altogether.

But I do understand stuff like this gets very annoying so I wouldn't blame you for moving onto a better built car. I've had my share of problems with my G35 as well as far as overall build quality and little electrical issues, but I'm a lifer with this car. :biggthumpup:

if its paid for i would keep it especially if its mechanically sound!

what year is your G?

A G35 with 90k is no big deal. Im sure I will have mine when it hase 190k or more and then if I need to I will drop another motor in before I sold it. If you want to spend money then great go get a new one. But there is nothing wrong with what you have:)

id say keep it. if your going into med school for the next several years and u really want something new and no trouble downgrade to a trusty honda civic or accord and call it a day.

I ran into the same dilemma a couple of months ago. My car is also an 03 with ~90k miles. I decided to keep the car because there really isn't anything out there that justify a change and that caught my eye. The car's look is still very beautiful and the mechanical part of the car has been flawless since the first day i bought it back in 02. Not that anything was wrong with the car's engine but I'm doing a full engine rebuild, since the car has become a project car now.

Like some have said, the issues you have posted are actually common problems to almost everyone on the board and are TSBs. For some the problems occurred early on when the car was still under warranty and for others like myself when it was out of warranty, but nonetheless it'll happen sooner or later. To give you an idea on how much it'll cost to replace the part. They are quite simple to replace yourself.

Door lock actuator = ~200 per side
Window motor = ~200 per side
CD player = thankfully mine went out during warranty so i'm not sure how much it cost. However you can get any after market stereo and buy a JDM double din face plate (~340)

What other electronic problems do you have?

I've had a few of the same problems. Both window motors went out. I took the door apart, cleaned the motor, and works like new. Took me maybe 2 hours total, but it works perfect now and it was free. My Bose cd player had nothing but problems, so I'm not switching to a Pioneer DD. Like someone has said, if the car is paid off, then it'd be smart to keep it.

I've decided to keep the car. It is paid off and the motor and transmission have been great so far. I am going to replace the passengers side window motor, both lock actuators, and probably get a double DIN kit from here:

Do most people with the double din get a double din cd player or a single slot cd player? If single slot, what do they do with the other slot? Any suggestions on radios to get? Also, I change my oil every 5k miles with Mobil 1 synthetic, but I use 87 octane fuel. I do not drive the car hard at all. Do you think my motor can last 150-200k mi?

But if you really don't want to lease/finance a Toyota or Scion TC (ickkk I know) They are basically giving those away.

ABout the radio thing, mst people leave it open to keep their ipod or phone and junk in.

The car suggests 91, I suggest you listen to the cars suggestion.

I've heard from a few people that its a misconception that buying cheaper gas will save you money. Because although it is more expensive, 91 burns at a higher temperature (or something like this, don't quote me) and gives you better gas mileage (on cars recommended for 91). In the long run, it will save you money and your car from breaking down. Change the oil every 3k as well and you should be good.

I'm keeping this car for life. So, you know my answer.
