how come i don't have to push the clutch in to start my G

every manual car i have driven i had to press the clutch in to start. why not the G :confused2: is that normal?

Focusedintntion Apr 13, 2010 10:14 PM

Sounds like the clutch position sensor is stuck or bad....

NachoCheese Apr 13, 2010 10:19 PM

Or bypassed. I had an 02 GTI that I could start without pushing the clutch in. I think the old owner bypassed it.

Beebo Apr 13, 2010 10:26 PM

yeah it can be bypassed

vp-g Apr 13, 2010 10:43 PM

^ how?

Focusedintntion Apr 13, 2010 10:53 PM

A piece of tape can do it on some cars lol...have you looked down under there?

loki05 Apr 14, 2010 12:14 AM

on my brother's tc I installed a remote start button on the car and it required bypassing the clutch. maybe something of this nature was done previously

When I installed my remote start we just bypassed the sensor :) simple and that's probably what's up with yours

You should always push the clutch in when you're starting the G anyway! One of the first lessons my Dad taught me when I was learning to drive along with get you foot off the clutch pedal once it's in gear. That's why I've never replaced a clutch....thanks Dad!

yeah, the previous owner could have by passed the clutch for a remote start. It's usually a little harder than a piece of tape though =P It shouldn't be bad for you car, and like gary c says, you should always push the clutch down when you start the car anyways.

vp-g Apr 14, 2010 07:32 AM

so where is this by pass switch that you guys speek of? and how do I remove it? if that is the case..

NachoCheese Apr 14, 2010 08:38 AM

Why do you wanna remove it? I don't think it really matters either way.

vp-g Apr 14, 2010 08:45 AM

I just want it normal like it should be.

vinco Apr 14, 2010 11:39 AM

I actually want to bypass mine, because the clutch is so stiff. My concern is that as stiff as the clutch is, it could cause premature wear on the crankshaft thrust bearings at startup, before the oil pressure comes up. I haven't looked at the pedal or switch yet, but is there another way to bypass besides tape?

GAU-8 Apr 14, 2010 11:51 AM

Does it start in gear or only in neutral? If it only starts in neutral, there's a bypass switch. If it starts in gear you have bigger problems because it should buck like a Bronco and possibly run in to something if in gear and starting.
