Can't shift past 3rd?!?

So i was on my way to the gym, and doing a bit of spirited driving, taking off from a stop i slipped a bit on a puddle from a sprinkler (had vdc off). No problem though had control of the car the whole way, anyways i was in MM and after my tires finally got traction i noticed i couldn't shift into 4th gear. WTF?!? i throw the trans into D and i let off the gas to see if it'll shift on its own and nothing, my rpms are holding steady at around 4k.

Finally i shut off the car and restarted it and everything is fine now, but i'm just curious as to what could of caused this, or has anyone had this happen to them??

BTW my coupe is obviously a 5AT.

i'm just taking a guess but maybe it went into limp mode? In bmw, if it goes in limp mode/safe mode it stays in one gear.

During your "Spirited Driving" and getting into water you may have hit the rev limiter and scared the ECU....shame on you!

Limp mode. You will be fine. Just the ECU preventing you from harming itself during your "spirited driving."
