Carbon Fiber
Hey Guys,
I'm not into street racing or racing modding... but my neighbor has his car with both CF Hood/Trunk/Wing... I just saw the CF Doors/Hood/Trunk for my 03 Coupe.
My real question is What is the real purpose of the CF??? is it just looks? or does it make a "Significant" difference in weight??? I know CF is lighter than Aluminum or metal... that's why I said significant....
Thx guys.

I just wanted to shine on this and tell you know. My last vehicle before the G was a 2000 Celica GTS. My whole front end was CF except the bumper. I took a front end hit and I will tell this much, I swear I felt no impact because the CF seemed to take it all. but the damage is unbelievable to look at. I have the pics to prove it. This is from October 8th of this year. The only injury I sustained is a broken hand from the airbag.

Thanks. I took those as I stood outside laughing at what the lady had on that hit me with my coworkers who came to assist. I am a Officer in my city so I got to be up close and personal.
EDIT- On a side not believe it or not that CF lip survived it all only obtaining a scratch on that side.

CF is usually done for looks but it is infact lighter and stronger than the OEM material used. To answer your exact question it is not a significant amount of weight saved or increase in strength. Most racecars and hi-end exotics use exclusively cf for body panels, like the new Corvette z06. IMO the cost for the CF parts is not worth the minimal reduction in weight or strength unless you are completely gutting the g/z for the track...

And to answer the original post, the original purpose of carbon fiber panels was for weight reduction of body panels. But since i think most of the metal on our cars is fairly thin and aluminum (i might be wrong, just guessing) the weight loss from going to carbon fiber wouldn't be too large unless you replaced all the panels.
