idle relearn question

Just cleaned the throttle body because I was bored. When I started the car, it started idling high so I did the idle relearn procedure which is pretty easy and it goes back to normal idle but then I turn of the car, and re start it, it idles high again.

What am i doing wrong?

3 seconds, 5 pedal presses times within 5 seconds, 7 seconds then push for 20 till light stays on then within 3 seconds release pedal than restart car, wait 20 seconds.

What am I doing wrong? Should I clean the MAF? Replace throttle body gasket? Not throwing any codes.

Did it three times already.

I have a CAI.

Timing is key honestly i had this problem after cleaning my throttle body and never fixed it. The throttle eventually fixed itself and adjusts but now my car idles at 800 apposed to 600 which it should.

It's not throwing a code though. Like i said, it goes to the correct idle after i do it then when i shut off the car and restart it, it returns back to the high idle.

Should i still follow that procedure?

Try all of these...

**a quick reset can be accomplished by disconnecting the negative battery terminal, and depressing the brake a few times.
ECU Resetting Procedures
Timing is extremely critical. If it is NOT DONE within the specify time, the ECU will not reset and the Check Engine Light (CEL) will continue to remain ON.
Operations Procedures
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following steps (2a and 2b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
2a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD).
2b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the CEL starts blinking.
4. Fully release the accelerator pedal (while the CEL is still blinking)
5. Wait about 10 second.
6. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for more than 10 seconds.
7. Fully release the accelerator pedal (The CEL light will continue to blink).
8. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” position and now you can start the car. The CEL light should be gone.
If the CEL light continues to remain ON, repeat the above steps. Timing is EXTREMELY critical to resetting the ECU.
Accelerator Pedal Release Position Learning
Operation Procedure
1. Make sure that the accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
3. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
4. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
5. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
Operation Procedures
1. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch to “ON”.
3. Turn ignition switch to “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Make sure that the throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.
Idle Air Volume Learning (Throttle Position Learning)
It is better to count the time accurately with a clock. 1. Perform “Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning”.
2. Perform “Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning”.
3. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
4. Turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 10 seconds.
5. Confirm that the accelerator pedal is fully released, then turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
6. Repeat the following (steps 7a, 7b) procedures quickly five times within 5 seconds.
7a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal (HARD)
7b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
8. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the Check Engine Light (CEL) stops blinking and turned ON.
9. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the CEL is ON.
10. Start engine and let it idle.
11. Wait 20 seconds.
12. Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure the idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications.

Figured out the problem. Didn't do step 1 correct. Runs perfect now

Step 1 as in turning the key into the ON position for 3 seconds? I'm having this problem too, my idle will relearn correctly (will reset to 650rpm vs the usual 800). I will drive the car around, and all is good. However, whenever I turn off the car and back on, the idle is back to 800ish. Anyone have any idea why it's not saving the idle correctly?

Here is another thread I found with the same issue: http://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-d...emembered.html

"Also, if it hasn't cured itself by now with all the mileage you've driven, only the dealer who has the consult III can fix the issue. I know because I tried the idle relearn procedure a good 20 times and I knew it was done correctly because I was able to turn off the check engine light and fix the idle loping. But those things never held, soon as I would shut the car off and turn it back on, the idle was back up over 2k rpms."

Looks like the only way for your idle relearn to "save" is to use the Consult III from the threads I've found :/

i did the same thing and i could never get the idle back to normal i eventually had to have someone reset it with an obd2 tool kinda sucked but its been idling good ever since.

Enigmatic42 04-26-2012 11:37 AM

yeah i had this exact problem after cleaning the throttle, spent hours on it using that method listed above, only solution was to pay the dealer 200 bucks to use his ecu thing.... ****.

nadjkovic 05-04-2012 10:37 AM

well what do they do? Anyway I can purchase the software used to reset it? I can see myself having to do this more than once in my future -_-

For the idle relearn, after you do the pedal dance do you still wait the rest of the 5 seconds then start the 7 second count? Or do you start the 7 second count right after you do the 5 pedal stomps?
