P1078 code Exhaust Valve Timing (EVT) Control Position Sensor
My Service Engine Soon light came on and I went to AutoZone to have the code read.
Below is the read out:
Definition:
Exhaust valve timing control position sensor
Circuit bank 1
Probable cause:
Blocked oil passages to actuator
Cam/Crank sensor fault
Actuator faulty
Engine mechanical condition
After searching the internet it seems that there is a CAM (inner) sensor and EVT (outer) sensor for each bank. However, when I called Nissan the parts guy told me are 2 CAM sensors on each bank and they run around $90 a piece. Now Im confused and dont want to replace the wrong part and waste time/money. The car runs fine; it just has a little higher idle (used to be 600k now around 1100k).
Nissan quoted me a $65 diagnostics fee plus the part and $95 labor. I don't know how many hours they charge for this job but it seems do-able from the information others have posted online.

the evt sensor is a cam sensor, it's the exhaust cam sensor... rev up's have variable intake AND exhaust valve timing, non rev up's only have intake - this means your rev up has 4 cam sensors (an intake and exhaust for each side)
bank 1 is the passenger side, so you are throwing the code for the exhaust cam sensor on the passenger side. it is the cam sensor farthest to your right when you are sitting in the car. you can get to it from the top, but it's easier from under the car (5 minutes to change)

not sure if it will do damage... the crank and cam sensors work together and one not working may cause electrical damage, but i'm no good with electronics so i don't know. If anything it should keep your variable exhaust valve timing not work (hopefully on both sides to avoid unequal power distribution) and you will lose top end power. it's not hard to change, i'd change it now

I replaced mine Saturday and it only took about 15 minutes. I was lucky and had the easiest one of the 4 to get to without moving any other parts. I got my sensor (part# 23731-AL616) from InfinitiPartsUSA.com - 1-888-344-6346. I called them to confirm I was being sent the correct sensor. I found them to be very helpful, just be sure to have your VIN prior to calling.
The RevUp engines have 2 sensors on each bank but I believe the RevUp engines only came with a manual transmission for 05-07, but I could be wrong

Did it clear the the SES? I thought if it's code P1078, then it would be for bank 1 (passenger side), but when I took the sensor out it was straight, and not angled. Part#23731-AL616 is angled.
