Keep it? (2004; 100k miles)

Hi guys (excuse the colloguialism, but I assume that most of the audience is male anyway:) )

I just purchased a 2004 G35 coupe from a dealer for just under 15k. The car had one owner (a military man) and had regular maintenance (as shown by the carfax). I took it to my mechanic prior to purchasing and other the mildly worn rotors (which were subsequently resurfaced) and slightly worn tires, he indicated that it was in good shape.

I haven't had any trouble with it, despite a mild sulphuric smell. I imagine that is owing to the fact that I tried putting middle-grade gas in; I plan to switch to premium.

I have had nothing but anxiety since I purchased the car. I'll be moving from VA to PA for grad school and I'm worried, with so many miles, that something will go wrong.

Should I trade it in?

Help!

Probably the catalytic converters.

Your good to go, as long as the mechanic says its good then don't worry the vq is a strong reliable motor..

sulphuric smell from the cats could also mean the cats are in fact WORKING properly. Usually you get the sulfur smell (like someone ripped out a fat one) when you drive hard. It doesn't really have to do with the grade of gas you're using, or brand.

I get this sometimes with my car when I go wide open throttle. Anyone who assumes my cat isn't working properly is 100% wrong because it passed emissions with GREAT results and had the cat inspected and I was told it looked perfect inside.

With that said, I urge you to switch to premium (91 octane at least) gasoline now.

As for miles, there are G35's here with superchargers with way more than that and their cars aren't having any issues.

You just got it and haven't had any major issues. Keep it.

I think he means overall.

Thanks for the input everybody. As for hard-driving, I try to keep my rpm's under 2,300 for mpg reasons :) and I'm easy on my brakes.

I suppose my main concern was hopping on the highway and driving home to VA from PA; if the car had lower miles I wouldn't think twice. For day-to-day driving, I'll be staying mostly around campus, which is 5 minutes from my apartment.

I have a 1999 mustang cobra (hand built engine) with 101K miles.
I have a 2002 Audi A4 3.0L with stick 193K miles.

Now my wife and I have this 2003 G35 with 112K..
That 3.5L will last and last and last......
Parts are readily available.
Forum support is great.
Aftermarket support is great.

Your Car Fax is great.
It was babied; You're going to baby it.

Yes it is used and it will need things, but with the aftermarket support, every new part needed is a chance to upgrade!!
It's a car.
They all break.

IMO don't even worry about it anymore.

PS: If it does need Cats, add Fast Intentions HFC and gain instant HP.

Good luck in school...and enjoy the experience.
I'm 52 and want to cap my BSEE with a Masters in Math!!

Hey Shurur!

Thanks for the input. I'm going to keep it. I've always wanted a sports car--since my dad promised my his old MR2 (until the trans blew). I lost my dad last year and I'm sure he would love this car.

I'll get the Prius when I go for my PhD :)

(P.S. I'm all for an MA in math--go for it!)

ValerieG35 06-16-2013 03:00 PM

Do you love the timeless looks of the car?

Do you love the sound with a z-tube/ pop-charger with hfc by Fast Intentions(like me)?

Do you stare back at the the car after parking it?

Do you love the staggered look( 255 in the back) Michelin Pilot Super Sport?

Do ya?

I do, so I'm keeping the car even after an engine re-build with oil consuming issues still present.

HKK!

Guys are running with over 200k and still going..

slvitale 06-16-2013 04:13 PM

Herekittykitty, "yes, yes, yes--and I do look at it as I'm walking away, though I pretend to be adjusting the key fob!

Sorry, Valerie, er, no Prius?
