Question about rim size 18s or 19s
 

I have a 2005 g35 coupe, it came with 19" inch premium rims, my friend who works for Les schuab told me that I should get 18 inch rims, can you guys tell me the difference of eachother. And the pros and cons of each, I'm looking to eventually build this car up, thinking about twin turbo, or supercharged, back to the main question, I don't know a whole lot about the benefits of different sized rims, so if someone could just help me out with my decision

You'll get slightly more torque to the ground (depending in tire height) with the 18"s and tires are WAY cheaper.

19s will fill up the wheel well a little better.

I'm going to assume his #1 reason was cost of tires, as 18" tires are cheaper than 19" tires, and 17" tires are cheaper than both.

Main difference, which should be obvious, is that the rims are 1" smaller in diameter. That gives you a slightly taller sidewall, which allows for a little more sidewall flex. Handling will be reduced with the smaller sidewall, but the sidewall flex should allow for a little bit better traction than 19" wheels.

Smaller diameter wheels also move the center of mass closer to the hub allowing for a reduction of power loss through spinning larger diamter wheels.

For drag racing, you want smaller diamter wheels with larger sidewalls. For handling, you want bigger diameter rims. The choice is yours.

With a power adders, i'd probably swap to 17" or 18" wheels to get a tire with more sidewall to reduce the ease of spinning the tires. That's why drag cars tend to have small diameter rims. The larger sidewall helps absorb the shock of putting the power to the ground like this

Did your friend elaborate HIS reason you should get 18's? Does he want your 19's? Because I do. :)

Smh... My question was addressed to op where his friend said that he "should" go down to 18. Was his suggestion backed up with a reason..

I think the spokes would bend or pull out if you tried to put any size rim on our car, after all the g35 weighs 3500 pounds or so.

My sedan came with 18" "sport" wheels, the tires had a 50 aspect ratio (tread width/sidewall height), I went to 19" wheels (for the look) but then put tires with a 40 AR which kept the original rolling circumference so my speedometer is still right on the money. I tried 35's but I bent too many rims.

The 18" tires are cheaper, rides a little better. 19" rims look better and fill up the wheel well! Looking at our cars with 18" rims/tires the wheels look small and the sidewalls in comparison look fat! Your choice, myself I'd never go back to a smaller rim...Gary

Most cars had 12", 13" or 14"

The Mini had 10"!

One of the main resons I wanted to ask, was because I want black rims, so if I'm getting new rims, I was just curious to see what the rim size does to your car, and btw my friend said to get 18's because it will be easier for you car to roll smaller wheels, like easier on the engine to push them I guess, if you guys think that's false tell me how or why :)
