Exclamation 05 6MT Notchy gear engagement.

My G35s transmission since new has felt notchy specially 3rd. It's like the synchros are slow let the gears line up. I was thinking of going from 75-85 gear oil to 75-95 in hopes to help out. I'm using Redline gear oil now. Any better results with Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobile One? I know the oil must be G4 compatible. Is there any adjustments that help this problem? Thanks in advance.

Get that redline out of there and swap in OEM Nissan MTF. Our transmissions are picky as hell about gear oil and Redline actually has a reputation of resulting in notchy shifting even in vehicles that don't usually have that problem. I switched to Redline in my Tacoma for about 3 months and then dumped it and went to Amsoil. My Tacoma's tranny has always been buttery smooth (even now with 140K on it), but for the short duration that I had Redline in there it shifted like $hit.

Almost everyone on my Tacoma forum who has tried Redline has experienced the same thing. I don't know how Redline managed to get so popular considering those who actually know cars and do an unbiased comparative assessment of it against other oils seem to end up disliking it.

On my previous 06 G35 6 sp manual that I traded in at 171796 miles I never changed the transmission fluid that came when I purchased new and never had a problem.

Why did you remove the factory transmission fluid?

Never try to fix anything that isn't broke

What redline fluid are you using? MT90 or MT85? MT85 is the best on these trannies, as the thicker gear oil can make things notchy when cold. I've always either used Redline or OEM Nissan MTF.

Also the older pre-CD009 transmission versions had problems with synros going bad, that could be part of your problem. The CD009 came out in late 05/06+ models. Earlier versions had a double cone synro on 1st, 3rd, and 4th. The CD009 bumped up to a triple cone syncro for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

The only way to tell what trans you have is to look for a piece of paper glued to the bell housing on the passenger side. Was a dumb way to label these since the paper can fall off at some point.

just because its working fine doesnt mean you should leave old fluid in there.

Exclamation 05 6MT Notchy transmission issue. Part 2

Thanks for all the replies... The reason I changed the tranny Oil was because of the Notchy shifting since new. The forums before recommended REDLINE MT85 GL4 compatible. They also said to flush, change, and bleed the clutch fluid. I did it also. It seemed it got better and lasted a few months before returning back to were it was. The car was made on 02/05,so hopefully it does not have the defective synchros as someone mentioned. I was hoping it's a lubrication or linkage adjustment issue someone has experienced and found a solution, Any more ideas?

Wow... that stuff costs a fortune. Where are you guys buying this and for how much?

I think I was able to buy genuine Nissan MTF fluid from my local Nissan dealer for like $9.50 a bottle x4 for a MT transmission fluid change. With tax it was around $42 or so.

Has anyone here tried slightly overfilling their tranny by driving the side that the filler is on up onto a slightly raised surface (such as a platform of single-layer height bricks or some cut pieces of 2x4) and then filling it until the fluid leaks out the filler hole? Having that side up slightly higher than the other side will allow you to go slightly higher with your fill capacity than you would with it on a completely flat surface. People do this in a lot of cars and trucks to help with notchy shifting. It's nothing extreme, but you might get an extra 1/6'th - 1/8'th of a quart in there. I noticed when I drained m y original factory fluid that some came out when I opened the filler port even though I was parked on flat ground... so it seems to be slightly overfilled from the factory.

MT85 is comparable to Nissan MTF price wise. I get it off Amazon, CZP also sells a package of 4 that's reasonably priced. Cheap out on fluids now, buy a new transmission later, your call.

05 6MT Notchy transmission issue reduced....

Well Guys, The "EXPERTS" recommended that I try AMSOIL 75-90 GL4 gear oil. The results I must say is an improvement. Much better then Nissan oil or the REDLINE MT85 gear oil. It still does not shift like a Honda or a Porsche, but I guess I have to live with it.
Thanks Again for all your inputs.
