So test drove the 05's
 

Went to test drive the 05 g35 coupe 6spd and the 05 TL 6spd today. Question: Is it normal that there is vibration coming thru the shifter and the clutch? The TL showed no vibration anywhere, only on the g.

well the TL is FWD....thats the first thing I noticed too about the G, I like it!

I think it may have something to do with the drive by wire technology that Nissan uses in the design of the G.

BTW, you should not be driving around town with your hand on the stick, 2 hands should be on the wheel at all times unless you're shifting. ;)

Want to feel something really weird? Go test drive the G again and when you depress the clutch, turn on the wind shield wipers. You can feel the wind shield wiper blades THROUGH the clutch. Talk about feedback... :D

I test drove a nice used NSX, not to long ago before I decided on the G.

It had a little bit of chatter on the clutch as well. I think many high HP manual trannys could possibly have this but I can only comment on the two cars I listed.

Does the TL use a cable or mechanical link shifter? Remember with the G, the shifter goes right into the tranny. When I had an Integra GSR, the shifter had a metal rod into the tranny and I could feel everything going through the tranny; it would even move around a little under high rpm. You will have a lot less movement and feedback through the shifter if it's a cable tranny though.

Looks like a cable shifter which explains why you get little to no vibration coming through.

The 6-speeds aren't comparable on the cars because one is RWD and the other is FWD. The G has the shifter connected directly to the transmission while the TL is FWD so a cable linkage is used.

I drove an '04 TL 5AT for a couple of months (After I sold my truck I was shopping for an 2005 G35 Coupe) and it was a nice ride. The only thing that bothered me was the darn torque steer. Granted, I have been driving RWD cars all of my life '87 Mercury Grand Marquis,'90 Lincoln Towncar, '98 Montero Sport 4x4. But it is just so twitchy. I can't even imagine how bad it is with a 6mt. The interior is nice and I really dug the sound system, but wrong wheel drive isn't my cup of tea.

Anyone open up the shifter on the 6MT? I'm wondering what kind of vibration dampner is in there and if it can be easily removed. I have a Hurst shifter in my Z28 and I prefer the solid feel even though it results in a little bit of extra vibration and sound.

PeteNJ: That torque steer is why the TL was panned by many reviews.
They said in the manual, if you shifted hard (accelerating) it would actually make the sterring jump to the side due to the difference in axle lengths.
I think it was road and track that actually recommended getting an Auto Tranny if you went with a TL to reduce the effect.

thanx for the reply guys. I don't drive a manual too often and didn't know if it was normal. I thought as long as i got a manual I would be happy, but even in 6spd form the TL is still pretty boring.

I agree...the 6spd for the TL is just TOO smooth, even with spirited driving. Not that I'm complaining, I definitely like the smoothness of it, the only thing I find kinda exciting is that Honda engine revving up :D With the G 6spd, you just feel more "connected" to the engine.
