6 M/T owners Questions Only for 03/04's
For those of you with close to 20 - 30K + miles How is your clutch holding up? Plus through avg use and not track use how long as the breaks suposed to last. I realize that the forum gets a lot of "MY CLUTCH WENT OUT AT 1500K" and It COSTS $500 to get my Front Brembros replaceD! I just want to know if its a very frequent problem because Im about to trade my car in for a 6 spd and Im definetly a little bit worried about it because it will be my first Stick car and I know how to drive a stick yet Im not as good as most of you guys. As a college student I really dont have and dont want to shell out 3k for a clutch after 30k miles esp since im paying for everything.
1) did you guys already get new brake pads already? if so when? 2) When do you think your going to change your Rotors 3) Are you having and clutch wear and tear problems besides the normal once in a while problems? The trade is pretty even, Im really not paying anything to get the 6spd, IM trading in a TB 5/T with everything cept navi and sat for a IP 6MT with everythign excpet navi and sat, both with around 10k miles. Thanks a million guys :) I have 30,700 as of yesterday and the brakes actually AMAZE me. Tons of pad left f and r and the rotors are smooth as can be with a very minimal ouside wear lip on the rotors! I am notoriously hard on brakes as well? With that said, I am installing cross drilled and slotted rotors and new pads all around on Saturday. I will definately keep the stockers close by as there is soo much left, I would re-install them if needed. |
just passed 20000 miles. still on stock clutch and brake pads with no issues whatsoever. somehow i'm still on original stock Michelin Pilot Sports, although my rears are pretty bald and will need to be replaced this summer.

Since the G35 has so much torque, you should not be revving to 2000 rpm and engaging the clutch, like on econoboxes. try to get it as low rpm as possible and do not try to accelerate while the clutch is not yet fully engaged.

Approaching 18K miles here and the clutch seems to be holding fine (knock on wood). The only gripe I have about the clutch is that it seems to be way stiffer than in other Gs I've sat in. My co-worker just picked up a 05' sedan and his clutch is not nearly as stiff as mine (did it sound wrong? LOL).
As far as brake pads go, when I went in for the 7500K services, I was told that I have 70% left in the front and 65% in the rear. I'm about to go in for an oil change next week, and will have them check on the pads again. I'm guessing it's probably about time to change the pads. |
1. Changed my brake pads at 30,000 miles to prep for a track day. Stock pads were almost down to the squeal tabs and it was time to replace them.
2. Hard to say. I just did a quick visual inspection and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. No excessive grooving and car stopped as smooth and straight as when it was new. 3. Absolutely no clutch or tranny problems in 38,000 miles that includes 20 runs at the drag strip and one track day. |
14,000 miles here, no issues whatsoever with clutch, brakes or tires.

32k on 03....clutch is stiff, but great....i am getting the rear axle "clicking" during engagement which I am taking in Monday to dealer....I've read that there is semi-common re-torquing of bolts back there needed to correct this issue and it should be done under warranty....the brakes have a slight (very slight) vibration when stopping hard from higher speeds....I am to try to get another 10k (I don't drive it hard or track it)out of them before replacing pads....I am of the opinion that with this car (as with most) as long as you don't abuse the sh** out of it, it should hold up real well...

Brakes... have gotten 24K (current miles on the car) with 3-4 track days out of original pads and rotors. Could have still ran a couple K more, but I changed to Hawk HPS cause we had them in stock. Rotors are still perfect, but changing those out next month for Brembo slotted. Just need a little more performance at the track. Rears are still running on oem pads and rotors. :cool: |
18500 miles; Rock solid; no problems at all except the rear tires are toast!
Dealer wants $325 each for the rear tires; I told them they need to quit smoking crack... (yes, I really did.) htb |
changed brake pads at 15k cause it sounded like something was grinding my rotors so and my gears grind 3rd/5th need to get that replaced im at 19k as of now

I've got about 33k miles on my '04. Tranny has been rock-solid since installing the 5 grounding wires at about 10k miles. Prior to that I had a grinding problem...
Can't say much about OEM brake pad wear because I also changed to a low dust pad (EBC Greenstuff) at about 10k miles. Rotors are in excellent shape with little more than a "tiny" lip to indicate some wear. OEM Tires? Fronts look OK but the rears? Forget it. My rears are long-gone but holding in there until my larger rims finally get here to replace them (11 weeks and counting...) |
Don't worry about the clutch
I've got an '03 6MT Coupe with the Brembos. The brakes needed to be changed at 25K miles, and ran about $500 or so. Tires last about the same, (and cost around $800-$1K).
I'm not expecting the clutch to go till at least a 100K miles. I learned to drive stick on a Ford Probe, and I felt the clutch should probably need replaced when I sold the car at about 70K miles. I've got a '93 MR2 which just had it's first clutch job after 150K miles. My guess is that modern clutches will last to over a 100K miles. In any case, you'll spend more money on tires than your clutch, so don't worry about it. :D Tony |
