Guess that's why you race on racing rims and leave the fashion hoops on the street. It sucks if people are expecting to get both from the HREs.

If HRE doesn't get on the ball and increase standards ASAP (and start a possitive PR blitz), this could be disasterous for them.

I will concede that a tracked Viper, with all that torque and a couple of foot-wide, sticky rear tires is definately going to put some strain on the rims. :D

Mark350GT Jun 20, 2005 10:21 AM

hehe yeah, but most cars that use HRE's on the track are pushing quite a bit of power whether they are a viper or not.

GeeMan Jun 20, 2005 11:17 AM

I read that too. For rims that cost like they're made of gold you would expect better performance.

escobar929 Jun 20, 2005 12:34 PM

^^^exactly, when dishing out that kinda money for rims, they better be top quality

TINMAN Jun 20, 2005 12:40 PM

so people spent money to buy gold and expect it to be hard as steel?

kenchan Jun 20, 2005 01:39 PM

if I was going to spend that kind of money, I would get BBS.

Sukairain Jun 20, 2005 03:55 PM

I would get rims that are made by companies used to making racing rims such as Enkei, Works, Volk Racing. I've always thought HRE's are quite light for their 2 piece cast/forged design.

Wow... nice find!

I bet info like this is leaking to all the car enthusiast forums now...

Nicholas GQ Jun 20, 2005 07:13 PM

i love the look of their wheels...anyone with HRE's wanna comment on this?

I was considering buying a set prior to this.

Cactus Jun 20, 2005 07:32 PM

I was wondering about this on the DPE's also. I wanna know how they will look and hold up in say 3 years or 30,000 miles. If I'm going to spend 4K on wheels they better last a long time!

Frostya Jun 20, 2005 07:39 PM

I think I read a whole tread about this on my350z.com... I don't think it's as bad as it seems... they had some other info on other rims like BBS also so might be a good read if your interested.

I purchased and installed some hre441r about a week ago. They feel lighter than the 19"rh evolutions (which were 23lbs) that I had on. Only had them on for about a week and they ride just as well as the stockers. No vibration and appears no noise when going over rough terrain. Great looking wheel. I will report if I encounter any problems in future.

in both series due to too many failures.

NINE, yes NINE failures in one race weekend Vipers.

Apparently the PCA is on their way to banning HRE's as well.

The racers have always called them "Fools Fashion" and i thought that was a little rough until I started seeing them fail at track events and how easily they bend and corrode.

Then, after Leslie had problems with hers corroding and I spoke with one of the owners, I realized quickly they were WAY out of reality as to strength and design.

Wasn't really surprised that they were banned (was at the meeting), but was surprised at ALL the problems reported.

Unreal for such an expensive wheel.

Apparently tolerances are sooooo poor that the tires often rotate on the wheels themselves as the rims are often slightly too small.

I posted this here for those too lazy to click on that link...

PCA not only has no ban on HRE or ANY wheel brand, they have experienced breakage of all brands of wheels on track, and have made an effort to educate racers about inspecting their wheels, as they will break from track usage sooner or later.

So far, you've done little to educate anyone, but rather have stirred up a ridiculous debate without substance or educational and responsible purpose.

If you were a professional racer, you'd already know that you can and will break your wheels, of all kinds, along with pretty much everything else on the car. HRE started as a racing wheel company before making street wheels, and has only a few peers in the wheel world with as much experience. You might be too young to know this, but I'm not. The fact that you or anyone writes off any brand as a "fashion wheel" or something like that, shows that you're more interested in gossip than technical detail or facts. If you really cared about racing safety, and also had any regard for the companies that spend money and time to supply the driving enthusiasts with quality engineered products, you'd look into things, learn, educate and share thoroughly, rather than sensationalizing a rumor and misleading others. Very irresponsible. All wheels break, being aware of this and also looking out for safety is a good goal. Being a gossip king is not.
