High RPM's
 

Hello,
My question is that I do alot of highway driving. What is a safe RPM level to keep my engine reving at? I see alot of cars with blue smoke coming out of their exhaust and I do not want my car doing that in years to come. i know the engine is build well, but question the piston rings when it comes to high revs at long periods of time...
I can drive at 3k rpms for an hours every day>> Is that too bad?

Is it new, if so keep it under 4K until break-in, otherwise let her rip if you want.

Cruise in top gear, change your oil regularly and you will be fine.

if not during breakin... 3k-4k should be fine for cruising. just don't go too high for too long.

If its 2005 then 7300RPM if its 2003-04 then 6800 RPM. :)

As clinty stated, "change your oil regularly." Just as long as you are using good oil or thick weighted oil to reduce leaks into the cylinders, you should be completely fine and the piston rings should hold.

They put the redline at 7000. Pretty sure that means anything under or at it should be okay.

3k IS NOT ENOUGH.. 3k = 80mph at 6th gear!! thats a no-no if u buy a G.. its 4k+!!

but yeah seriously keep up with the oil changes and maintanence and u can run the shiet as hard as u want..

I just was under the impression that driving at 3-4k for an hour at a time ...2 times a day was poor for the engine...

Yeah my expressway driving in 6th is at 3K or so.

I actually cruise at 3K all the time...no matter what gear. If I'm not driving in a hurry and just cruising I always shift at 3K. If I'm looking to make a little extra noise I'll run it between 3 and 4...but not for long.

Are your highways fairly flat? I sometimes throw it in neutral and coast down hill to let the motor unwind. Or gun it up another 10 mph and let it slow down in gear so the bearing forces are reversed. Driving the car for long periods in a narrower rev range should be okay once the motor is broken in.

I would check the oil frequently and if gets fairly dark before scheduled change then replace the oil.

if you driving at upper RPMs i would worry more about the gear that your on instead of how fast your going.. you can stay in 5k rpm as long as you want in 6th gear.. but try that in 1st or 2nd gear and you'll see what happens

Blue smoke is NOT from running down the highway at high speeds, it's lack of care on the oil change. Change you oil regularly, dino oil 3-4000 miles and synth oil 5-7000 miles, and you won't have a problem.

BTW, a pet peave of mine, the term RPM's. It's not "Revolutions per Minutes, it's RPM: Revolutions per Minute. ;)

I wonder why its dangerous to coast in neutral. My 20 year old driver's guide for learners says the same thing and you can fail your driving test for do this same. Is this some safety myth left over from the carburetor days when the engines would stall and lose brake vacuum?? :confused:

hit the brakes going down hill in neutral (i mean hard) then do it again while in gaer.. see if u notice a difference.. then take a hard turn in neutral then do it again in gear...
