Do G's and Z'a have alu frames?
i thought i read this somewhere. Can anyone confirm this. I hate the search function tonight.
|
Well, I do know that a lot of the suspension was made out of Aluminum to save weight.
I could be wrong, but I don't think the actual frame could be made from Aluminum. Please correct me if I'm wrong some one.... |
i tihnk if the frame were made out of alumnium it would crumple like like a piece of paper in an accident

I know the new corvette uses an aluminum frame but our cars use a steel frame I believe.
|
C'mon guys, are you guys car guys, or what? Our cars are unibodies constructed out of steel. One of the only cars around built totally out of aluminum is the Lotus Elise, which happens to be glued together with very special adhesives (I'm not kidding).

alumnium is so soft. i guess it must be heat treated or something to strengthen it.
|
Ok, I am an engineer, metal fabricator, and welder. Aluminum is very, very strong. Soft, yes, but strong for rigidity and tensile strength. Sport motorcycles are constructed entirely out of aluminum with the exception of Ducati trellis framed bikes. Yamahas, Hondas, Suzukis, and etc. are constructed out of aluminum. Aluminum I-Beams are used for the frames in Lotus Elises and are extremely rigid and light. Aluminum is expensive when compared to steel, therefore, our cars would cost nearly twice as much if it were constructed out of aluminum.
