Why can't I hit 60 in second??
 

When I had a G sedan loaner I had no problem hitting 60 in second gear, and that was an auto. I usually dont try to but I Decided to see if I could hit 60 in second in my coupe and I hit the rev limiter first. I though people were able to hit 60 in second with the 6mt. Any ideas as to whats going on?

Well, you have 6 speeds instead of 5.. and they're probably geared a little lower for better acceleration. Or maybe you are hitting 60, and your speedometer is just a little off.

yeah i cant seem to hit 60 either in 2nd, its probably just the gearing as ryoken said...

Dunno. Car & Driver claims a tested speed of 62MPH in second gear for the G35C 6MT. They use their own measuring equipment though. It's always possible our speedos are undercalibrated. Mine certainly reads a lot lower than my BMW's did (by about 5%), but on the other hand BMWs are noted for their "optimistic" speedos...

If your on a downhill, you should be able to easily reach 60 mph in 2nd gear !

Drive it off a cliff and you will get going even faster, regardless of gear!

I didn't say why cant i lift off in second gear. Although that would be nice. i was just wondering why I couldn't hit 60 but I guess the gearing does make sence.

It's pretty damn close. I don't know excatly but it's right below 60. I just noticed in the sedan that it was blatently 60 when it came out of second.

I don't think it's the gearing, I seem to recall hearing that 1,2, and 6 on the 6MT were identical to 1,2 and 5 on the 5AT, with gears 3-5 a bit closer together on the 6MT compared to 3-4 on the 5AT. I would think the 0-60 test in magazines were hit in 2nd gear, after all the penalty of another shift would probably make the 6MT slower to 60 than the 5AT if that were the case.

Some things that could affect your performance:

1) Gasoline- it's been reported that the ECU compensates for regular unleaded gasoline, hurting performance a bit. For best results you should use at least 91 octane.

2) Weather- if it's 100 degrees with 70% humidity, you're not going to get the same performance that you would on a crisp spring morning.

3) Weight- if you've added any aftermarket accessories such as 19" wheels or a monster stereo system you could be carrying some extra weight that would possibly hurt performance, though I wouldn't think by much.
