Do our g's have EDR's aka event data recorders??

i was reading through august 14th's TIME mag and came up on an article about (newer) cars coming out with event data recorders which record data like an airplane blackbox upon accidents such as deceleration, braking, speed. It'd be good to know if my 05 had this lil box usually located with abs sensor under seat. In the article it talked about how 2 teens that were racing and crashed killed 2 other people in a jeep they both hit. They lied and said they were doing average speed but after the kids 2 year old corvette was inpounded the police downloaded the info from his EDR system and it recorded a speed of 139mph 20 seconds prior to crash...both of the kids were then tried for murder b/c of this speed/fatality and they eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter serving 3 years each

Pretty much every car since like 2001 or 2002 has them. That means our G's as well. However, it's only able to record the last few (5, maybe a little more) seconds of the event right now.

hmmm thanks...my bro was involved in a fatal accident in his m3 i wonder if they checked his edr...any idea where it is located in our cars?

You have no reason to fear. Nissan does not offer up your data to law enforcement but GM sure will and so will Ford and Porsche. They will volunteer what they have collected on your vehicle evry time it was at the dealer...Gee Thanks...Luck Nissan is on our side.........So Far any way.

No clue. It's hidden, and in most cars, it's now hardwired into the car... Ouch, though, I'm sorry, is your brother fine (physically)?

Unless things have changed, the police/law can look for themselves.

If you're not driving like an idiot and killing people than why does it matter?

the same reason why these kids went to jail...lets say u were going
100+....cruising ....and someone gets into an accident around u (maybe someone next to u doin 100) or not and they lose it? maybe even get killed or kill someone? shiiii does happen and...if for whatever reason u stop on the scene i wonder what ur chances would be of not getting the EDR checked on ur car

Yea right. You both just happened to be "cruising" at 100+ MPH.

If you didn't cause the accident than you have nothing to worry about. Don't go around street racing and causing accidents and then you really have nothing to worry about.

chobble19 Aug 9, 2006 10:44 AM

well i can easily be cruising at 100 in my g feels like im doing 70 on 95....determining who caused an accident is nonsense these days anyway.....like i said shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii does happen mannn.

Yes, and we are watching you

I disagree. The science behind accident reconstruction is pretty advanced. Cause a fatality and the accident investigators will figure it out.

chobble19 Aug 9, 2006 10:55 AM

they sure will try to....and checking the edr's of the cars involved would be one way

Law enforcement has to request the data they want to see and hope they get it. The information on your vehicle is NOT public knowledge as you own the vehicle and the data is yours. The manufactureer can use the data for evaluation/warr. of their product lines. Once the vehicle is sold the manufactureer is not involved in its use-lawful or unlawful. Why should your info/data be given freely? Shouldn't you have the say so on your where and to whom your info/data goes?
