Wow, the wierd noises that come with the below-zero temp we've been getting

Here in the CHicago area, we've been getting below zero weather for a few days now. Just noticed a few of the strange noises it makes in this cold. Examples: low-pitch whine coming from the transmission when driving and the car is cold (it goes away when warm); creaks from somewhere outside the car, etc...can't wait for a warm-up....Anyway, my Bears just lost. Dangit!!!

Tranny noise is normal. Try to warm the car up as much as possible before you drive.

My brakes have gone nuts with squealing in this brutal cold. It may something to do with all of the salt residue I'm guessing as well.

ttrank Feb 5, 2007 11:24 AM

All the salt and dirt will get your brakes very dirty. Some brake cleaner should do the trick.

Well if you have a 6mt might be the syncro noise coming from the transmission

I get a strange whistling sound when its cold out, but it goes away. Kinda sounds like wind coming in the window but I know its not that.

Yep--that's exactly what it sounds like. You can hear it through the shifter...

Sounds like a cold tranny. The fluid needs to warm up.

tendotseven Feb 5, 2007 12:46 PM

my girlfriends is300 did that as well...but it hasnt been below zero here..only about 35 degrees farenheit, would that be the same cause?

BuckeyeG Feb 5, 2007 02:10 PM

Thats what mine was doing untill it got warm and i took it to the dealership and they are putting my new trany in as we speak.

ttrank Feb 5, 2007 03:22 PM

Did they say if it was the usual bad synchros or what?

BuckeyeG Feb 5, 2007 04:13 PM

i told the advisor that i thought it was the syncros and the tech looked at it and they called infiniti and told them to replace it.

Konsole Feb 5, 2007 05:08 PM

My steering column make crackle noises as it came down to me this morning... sounded frozen. *eeek*

Car runs great though, much better than previous cars I have had. I have an 06 X and it doesnt make any strange transmission noises that I could notice.

Its -4F, -25 with windchill, Ames Iowa

the heating fan makes a groaning kind of noise for about 5seconds when it starts up, theyre going to check it out friday. i also get a high pitched bitching noise coming from the passenger telling me the seat is too cold for her

mrdwaters Feb 5, 2007 06:38 PM

Wind noise? Or 6MT Syncros?

- So let me make sure I understand. They syncros problem sounds like wind coming through a small opening. I have a a high pitched wind sound, which sounds like it's coming from the sun roof, but I can't really isolate it. I wonder if its my 6mt (2004 w/ 22k miles)
