5AT can't hold on an incline?

Greetings,
Just had the strangest problem with my 05 5AT. On a slight incline of say 8 degrees, the auto trans can not hold the vehicle. I tried to parallel park and it was like having a stick all over again - without the benefit of a hand brake! Caused me to hit another vehicle. Mentioned it during my 15K service, just to be told it was normal. Did a search, but did not see any one else complaining. Suddenly I am a little concerned about having this car in an area with hills...

i'll test mine when i get it back tomorrow but i don't remember this being a problem on mild inclines

Mine won't hold on my driveway.

Might have something to do with the torque converter stall speed?

DaveB Mar 8, 2007 12:54 AM

That's about the only downside to having a high performance higher stall torque converter in this car. If rolling is such an issue then why use the foot brake and gas? It's not that hard.

Because I am 6'7" with a 39" inseam - long legs make it a little tough using both legs to park. Hand brake would have made it a lot easier! :)

i like it when that happens because i can pretend i'm in a manual :p

It's curious how people define "slight"! I would say that 8 degrees is very steep. :)

The typical road standards for maximum grade on collector streets is usually 8% (or about 3.6 degrees), and perhaps 10% (4.5 degrees) on residential streets.

I have the same problem on the parking garage ramps. Wants to roll down.

Pska Mar 8, 2007 10:33 AM

why didn't you buy a 6MT? :P

ttrank Mar 8, 2007 11:09 AM

I understand it is a bit of an inconvenience but not using the parking brake in a situation like that is bad on the tranny.

i think tat was the only draw back with the earlier sedans..no hand brake..gay

alphamatt Mar 8, 2007 01:00 PM

i have a 5AT and my experience is the opposite i have been on some pretty big inclines and my g usually doesn't roll down that is unless i have momentum, but if i come to a slow stop it usually holds and i can even take my foot off the brake and chill.

Not sure exactly what's going on there but every auto trans I've ever owned has exhibited this exact behavior on a steep enough grade like parking garages. I've had the same thing happen when I'm on a downhill grade and trying to back up. I think it has something to do with the torque converter but I don't know nearly enough about such things to speak knowledgeably on the subject.
