Ypipe or Ypipe with cat's only

I am thinking about getting a Y pipe only or Y pipe and cats. I di want the stillen exhaust or the borla but my last 3 cars have had a loud aftermarket ex. and i want something different/more refined, plus I like the stock sound anyway. Has anyone done this? If so what is the sound like and the power gains. Thanks

Re: Ypipe or Ypipe with cat's only

some folks have said that the borla sounds like stock. read this

https://g35driver.com/forums/showfla...view=&sb=&vc=1

if you want something to consider

the stillen is a little louder/deeper i think. nice tone though

That's a coupe thread, coupe and sedan exhaust's are different, something about the muffler location and size. The coupe borla system having the least in common with the borla system for the sedan, because of how it places it's resonator right after the cats and it's rear muffler is totally different than same for the coupe. That being said, I can tell the Stillen coupe system is of the same family as the Stillen sedan system, but to my ears, they don't sound the same. Sound clips for the Borla coupe and Borla sedan don't sound the same either, though by any measure sound clips don't really tell how a system sounds in person, you'll get a basic idea.

The borla is not loud and obtrusive at all. The stillen is a very high quality setup and shouldn't be counted out either. It's a different sound, but not bad and it has a few potential advantages over the borla, but then again the borla has a couple of it's own as well....

Re: Ypipe or Ypipe with cat's only

If you don't want to move to far away from stock exhaust system sound level's, replacing the oem Y-pipe is a perfect idea. Just keep in mind that most Y-pipe's on the market have 80mm collector's that are ment to be bolted to new stuff down stream. Since you'll keep the oem stuff down stream if you get a Y-pipe that has a 80mm collector, you'd be bolting up to a 65mm diameter pipe. Not good since you just spent the money on the Y-pipe to get more power. Simple fix is to have a muffler shop add in a transition piece ($20 part) that will blend the 80mm collector down to the 65mm oem pipe.

On the high flow cat quetion. Yes the oem cats are restrictive and the high flow cat's do flow a lot better. But, you've brought up how you like the oem system's sound quality. Several user's of high flow cats, have commented that the high flow cats give out a annoying raspiness. You might want to run a search on the subject, find those posts and see how you feel about that chance.

As far as what gains you'll get, that's hard to say. The sedan does not get a performance muffler like the couple does. So replacing the muffler (frankly just doing a Stillen or Borla true dual) will give you more power, but higher noise level's.

If you haven't seen these, he's some pics I took of the oem Y-pipe with the heat sheilds removed.

Here's a pic of the Jic Y-pipe, I think it's the best one you can buy, short of making your own It is a design that use's a 80mm collector, again as must do. Btw, the Jic Y-pipe is on national backorder till may.

Here's a company that makes a Y-pipe that uses the same collector diameter as the oem piping, 65mm. Price is on of the least expensive to at $285

Jim,
Good info on the Y-pipe. I wasn't aware of NFC untill now. I too would be interested in keeping the exhaust sound at a tame level. Too many years of modified loud exhaust ... I'm enjoying the 'luxo' cruise to and from work too much. I wonder how much power this piece + HKS/Blitz Muffler's worth (retaining center resonator).

Also, I noticed the pic on their website is missing the 'flex' portion you have shown above. I take it they no longer offert them w. 'flex' pipes?

Re: Ypipe or Ypipe with cat's only

I'd think the HKS/Blitz mufflers would have sound level's simular to the Stillen true dual/Borla true dual. I dunno, maybe, just maybe, not changing out the oem sedan center section might prevent part throttle noise (drone) may complain about with the true dual's. I've heard the Stillen true dual in person, I really did not thing it was very loud at all at full throttle from the outside.

I'd love to see someone do a really good single pipe system on the sedan a la Nismo, Y-pipe, 3" center section. To bad the JDM Nismo V35 system is so expensive and doesn't use 3" piping.

GSedan35, where did you get the pipe for your cutsom exhaust? What you're suggesting may be a worthwhile exercise.

Re: Ypipe or Ypipe with cat's only

Well, I had someone PM me on my350z.com with a great deal on a Acosta Racing Y-pipe with built in highflow Magnaflow cats, one of only two ever made. I bought it, only to discover that the Y-collector on it was horrible. But that set the wheels in motion to still use it's piping and high flow cat's to build my own true dual. I sat down and designed a system, wanting to copy Stillen's X crossover design. I cut up two Flowmaster Y-collector's to make a X crossover. Then I ordered a bunch of mandrel bends and but everything in my garage. I used a paint pen to label where everything went and had a muffler shop assemble my work. Only thing I don't like is they ad libed the rear piping while I was busy cleaning up some miter way cuts and my mufflers don't hang to my liking. Which I'll fix one of these day's.

I thought the "Y" pipe on the coupe was a different lenght?? Also what would net more power, a "Y" pipe or the high flow cats, the cats seem like a better power part. How big of a difference could the "Y" pipe make. just asking

IIRC it has been show that the Y-pipe on a stock 350Z will give about 5-6 rwhp. Not too bad if you ask me. I just bought myself a NFC y-pipe and will be putting it on soon to my stock exhaust with a Magnaflow 22" resonator.

Oem Z and oem G Y-pipes are the same parts. Do not waste a dime on buying a oem Z Y-pipe, if I understand right what was just said.

Re: Ypipe or Ypipe with cat's only

All Z's and G's use the same exhaust parts, from the headers to the mid pipe. It's the mid pipe that is a different length on the Z, same resonator as the G coupe. The G coupe's mid pipe is longer, because of the longer wheelbase.

Re: Ypipe or Ypipe with cat's only

OK, let me get this strait....

The y-pipe for the 350Z, G35 Coupe and Sedan are all the same?

So, a JIC or Fujitsubo y-pipe with the Greddy EVO/EVO2 would be a full cat back replacement? With the HKS or Blitz exhaust only the midpipe/res. would remain?

Any signs of someone offering a full caback in the near future?

Sorry for all the questions, I would just like some clarification.

As to what would add the most power, cats/y-pipe, on my Maxima, the y-pipe was hands down the biggest power gainer, on my 350Z it was a toss up....

Yes, Y-pipe, cats and exhaust manifolds too. Platform engineering at work.
