New here, I've got some questions.
 

Alright, I want to begin by introducing myself. I'm Bryan and I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and I'm currently in the market for a G35. I know Janik (wannbeSS) pretty well from another forum.


After owning a multitude of vehicles from mostly GM's to Fords, and recent Honda's, I'm kinda "converting" to Nissan.


Today I went ahead and drove an 03 G35 5AT and I've decided that this is going to be my next car as soon as I sell another of the automobiles that I already have. So asking complete honestly, what are the pros and cons about these vehicles?


The 03 sedan that I drove today was immaculate. It was the dark red color "Garnet Fire??" and it had the light brown interior. There were 81,000 miles on it and it seemed VERY solid for its age so now I'm wondering about their reliability, fuel consumption, response to modifications, etc.

I hear they typically average around 20mpg for RWD versions and turn down solid mid-to-high 14 second 1/4 miles. The vehicle is going to be a daily driver, but I typically like to tinker around with anything I buy.

-Are there any types of computer upgrades or tuning software? (yeah lol I'm used to Honda and their multitude of options with this)
-The automatic transmissions on vehicles I've test driven seem to have a slight hesitation. Is this normal and is there a way to quicken it up?
-Any other things I should look for before buying the vehicle?

Hi Bryan.

I think you'll find the answers to these and more if you just take a little time and read in the applicable sections.

In short -

-Computer flashes are moderately successful when combined with other mods. This isn't a Honda motor, and it won't respond to mods like one. It's pretty well tweaked right out of the box.

-Some folks claim improved shifting performance when a grounding kit is used - opinions vary - read around and decide who you think is credible. Overall, myself included, 5AT owners are happy with their trannies.

-The cars respond only moderately well to bolt ons, but they do respond. Again, which ones, at what cost, are up to you. If you want a real performance car consider FI, or look at another car.

A Plenum Spacer is the best mod you can get for this car, 10-14 HP gain and it will look totally stock

I think a twin turbo with a buit motor is the best mod you can get for this car.

Now best bang for the buck I will go with a spacer. ;)

Bryan has a turboed Honda and an 02 Oldsmobile Bravada running low 14s-high 13s... he isnt exactly dumb with motors lol

UpRev has Osiris tuning software that works well - Shawn Church is a honda tuner (since you have Honda background you mihgthave heard of him), he has tuned several Gs and Zs with Osiris (including mine)... TechnoSquare also has an ECU reflash that is worthwhile (I has it prior to Osiris).

Valve body upgrade helps… there a few to choose from – search around the forums… Ground Wires help a bit… and believe it or not shorter rear end gears made a difference in my AT.
