Compass

I recently pressed and held down the compass button for a few seconds the other day as I was trying to set my clock due to daylight savings time (I know; I was driving, it was dark out, etc).

Anyhow, the compass now reads 3 dashes, "- - -".

I read the manual, and it says to take the car into an Infiniti dealership. I searched on this forum, and found some postings, but they dated back in 2005 and referenced 2003 models. The suggestions were to drive around in circles until the car can calibrate itself.

Just curious to see if anyone has had any similar experiences, and can confirm that the above method is still the only way to correct the issue.

I have a 2005 sedan.

thanks!

'05 Sedan owner's manual page 2-8:

"Correction functions of the compass display
If the direction is not shown correctly,
carry out correction procedure set out below.
Correction procedure
1. Push COMP switch for about 10 seconds.
The direction bar starts blinking.
2. Turn off electrical equipment such as
lights, hazard indicator, air conditioner,
etc. Then drive the vehicle
slowly (less than 3 MPH (5 km/h)) and
turn the vehicle one or more times in
an open and safe area. When the compass
displays the direction, the procedure
is completed."

I have an 06 and I got the same thing after changing the zone. But the instructions from the manual doesn't work for me. In fact, the tech from Infiniti couldn't make it to work either (following his usual way and then the manual). He was going to order a new clock unit for me during the next visit.

Anyway, without doing anything, it starts working again after a day. I suspect in my case, I have to drive it for awhile before the unit was able to properly detect the gps coordinates.

It's a standard magnetic compass - GPS has nothing to do with it. The owner's manual instruction that I posted above worked just fine for my '05 sedan.

mine finally came back on after 24 hours, so I agree that it probably takes at least some driving time before it can get its bearings...

When it says "turn the car" it means in circles. I went to the neighborhood supermarket before work (empty lot) and just coasted in circles. I think it took 5 or 6 times on my 2006.

I've seen the same instructions in other cars as well. But yes, you look a little dorky taking your g35 in slow continuous cirlcles around a parking lot. If it really bothers you, just pretend your drifting in slow motion.......

I heard you had to do ten push-ups after you do the circles.
