You gotta close it off. What i meant to say was put your palms over each tip to seal it off. The engine will actually struggle if you close it up well. Exhaust leaks become pretty loud at that point.

But i don't think it's an exhaust leak.

Here's my car with a loud exhaust leak after putting te exhaust back on. It's a repeating tick tick tick tick. Basically it makes the car sound like crap. Exhaust leaks don't really whoosh. Sounds like another issue.

Forgive me for posting another type of vehicle on this board, but it gets the point across

btw, after this vid i fixed the leak

But *some* automatic transmissions i have expeirence with do make a sort of buzzing or whirring noise when low on trans fluid. I have no idea if the G35 does this as well, but i've seen it occur on more than one occasion in other vehicles

Hmmm that might be something to check. I definitely don't think it's an exhaust leak, because that ticking doesn't happen for one, and for two, it's ONLY at these RPMs. And under load which I realized this afternoon. And I listened for it after ~5 minutes of driving, and I could still hear it going up a hill.

Let me know what you find out from the dealer, that will probably help

I had to laugh when I read this thread because I've had the exact problem for a couple months now. Happens also a bit at 1300RPM, but definitely at 2400-2500RPM and above that, seems to go away. And yes, it is only under load - I put my car up on stands and could not replicate the issue. Nor could I replicate while in park with the car on the ground.

Had my car in for 90k service today (although I do most stuff myself so they wound up doing hardly anything) and asked them to take a look. They told me they heard some stuff rattling around in one of the cats -- which is about the worst thing they could have told me. $1400 for the driver side cat installed. No way I would fix a minor issue like this for that amount. I'm still not exactly sure what the problem is .. something breaking loose inside the cat and rattling? But only at those RPM?

In any event, I'd be curious if you took your car to a dealer (don't tell them what my dealer said) and see what they say. My dealer has always been good to work with, so I don't have a reason to be suspicious other than this sounding a bit weird.

Let me know if you find out anything. I'm not gonna do anything on it at least for now.

Okay. I went to Infinity at 7:30 a.m. this morning at 59,993 miles. Talk about close. I had to drive to 130 miles yesterday for business purposes and noticed on my gps I would be over 60k so I started cutting through weird streets and took over an hour longer to get home so I could stay under 60k.

Enough of that.

Relief Ensues:

I had them check three TSB's (You can view them at Infinitihelp.com)

Those were:

1. Brake Rotor Noise
2. Noise from Front Compression Rod
3. Engine Noise

Everything is fine but I still had them write them in just in case.

A woman young 30's interupts the service guy I was speaking to and says.

"What you are feeling is the Purge Valve Solenoid."

She goes on, "the car goes through a check system and it makes short sounds after turning on the car and driving."

She makes three really different yet funny sounds. I had to laugh and agree. Then goes on and states this is very normal.

I just bought a beautiful 06 sedan w/ 54,000 so I didn't know if it was normal or not.

I hope this helps and you are as lucky as me. Reading threads on here about G35's over 150,000 with little to no problems makes me feel very happy indeed.

Please see this. It wasn't Purge Valve Solenoid after-all.

Hope this helps!

Nope, I know that noise, and the noise hasn't been there since I bought the car. It's a rushing air sound, not a grinding sound.

Maybe someone installed a turbo kit on your car when you weren't looking and it is the BOV

I would say that, but if thats the case, I need to fix the BOV. it doesn't do it at shift, it does it mid range rpms. I'll see if I can shoot a video tomorrow so everyone understands where I'm coming from

I had the same problem , my Stillen HFC completely blew out (correragted metal ) and a two inch plug lodged in my Stillen Generation 2 Cat Back Muffler. It was completely hidden, but between 4500-7500rpm my G sounded like a MIG fighter , not a car , it made me crazed, couldn't figure out what it was . Pulled in the drive =way one night in wifes car and her headlight perfectly illuminated the banana stuck in my exhaust. 2hours labor to get it out Check your cats, I got a stock set 4 sale

Yeah, I gotta check the cats. How long have you used your stock cats for?

Yeah, don't think it's the cats the three of us didn't see any holes

I'm a bit of an idiot when it comes to cats, do HFCs pass NYS inspection anyone know?

I don't think the issue is holes. It's something breaking loose inside the cat and causing the resonating sound. I don't have any reason to doubt what my dealer told me, but it would be nice to get some independent verification of the issue .. not that your issue is necessarily the same as mine. Sounds the same though.

If it means anything, my car passed NC inspection (dealer did it while I had it in) and NC pays a lot of attention to emissions. So that would be the good news - it is not a problem that HAS to get fixed.
