NFSP it seems like we're on the same page lol
and to Nyteowl:
I have the module to allow the steering wheel controls to work flawlessly with my unit for a mere $35. My point wasn't JUST the inconvenient location, but the fact that they're SWITCHES and BUTTONS. No ****. it makes for very cumbersome volume control.
But go ahead, fix the original unit. Or at least try. And when it breaks again and/or you can't get it fixed (like mine was) I can say I told you so. I was simply trying to simplify the solution for the OP and provide an overhauled alternative for the same amount of money and cause much less hassle for the OP. Your $0.02 and opinion seems to be more important than mine, however, so by all means... live with your stock HU while I rock out with my aftermarket head unit
oh, and to the comment about the 6 CD changer... sure.. you've got 6 CDs... but I've got a single disc that supports MP3 and data... and my iPhone holds 32 GB of music and that's hardwired to charge conveniently in my center console. Like I said before... much better solution.

Ever since I had the headunit fixed, I haven't used the CD Player, been using my Tape deck for Mp3's, and there is a DIY to setup for IPOD, if you want to go that route...

Don't have an Ipod/MP3 thing, never will. I hate them.
At least until they stop producing CD's entirely including CDR's, I will always prefer a 6CD changer over one of those things.
I'm not here to debate which is better and why, but that happens to be my personal preference at the moment.

I hate iPods too, but I just pretend my 120gig is a 200 disc voice-command CD changer (lossless takes up a lot of space) with virtually no disc swap lag.
Lossless compression on iPod + aftermarket headunit is definitely higher quality than a CD in the stock base unit, and worlds better than the stock Bose unit.

I actually prefer the stock look too. I have nav, and an iPod adapter..so no desire to go aftermaket. Plus I am not crazy about the look of some aftermarket setups.
I am happy with the sound of the stock Bose too. I am not an audio junkie. As long as I can listen to my music I am fine. I am not into bass and all that. Rather listen to the outside world.
Plus an aftermerket hu woulk get jacked out of my car. I caught some kids trying to peek through the windows one night at 2am. I blasted the panic alarm and scared the **** out of them.

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods
Flame on people but I like my Bose. It sounds pretty good and I have an 05 so I do have a volume ****. I am way too old for thumping bass and I must say that the Hu performance improved dramatically when I installed a grounding kit. Weird that I really felt no difference in the shifting (got a lot better with the HR y pipe last year) but the interior lights brightened slightly as well. The sound out of the Bose immediately got louder and a lot cleaner. Wasn't what I expected from the GK but I'll take it. Kinda reminded me of this:

IDK... the grounding kit would have to help A LOT to make it decent...
And I'm not talking about "Thumping Bass" that's an easy trick anyone can pull off... My biggest gripe with the Blose system is that it has too much bass, and it comes off all "muddy" sounding, and there's no good way to tune that out because the Bass/Treble controls are useless.
