You could theoretically use anything oily (Crisco, extra virgin olive oil, fresh Mobile1, etc.) because it will temporarily fill in all the fine scratches and look glossy. The problem is that once it's washed off, it will leave the dry, hazy surface as before. You need something durable to seal it up but still keep that shine. On a side note, I would prefer to not have someone rubbing ATF on any portion of my car.

 

the 3M kit removes the factory clear coat that comes on the lenses. Its the clear coat that initially hazes due to lack of wax.

The yellowing after the 3m kit is the lens being burned by UV.

Also, the inside is coated with a soft UV coating to protect the bezels from being burned.

you can clean the inside of the lens but you must use EXTREME care

 

yeh its a temporary solution! and what you think the 3m kit is going to be permament? its going to do the same thing! ATF isnt going to do anything to your headlights! its not going to ruin your 1/4 mile times!

 

what can you seal it with after you use the 3M kit?

most shops shouldnt charge more than 50 a light to do so

 

lol kit which is 22 and clear coat which is 50 or ATF every few weeks! hmm i think the ATF is more cost efficient!

or you can pay the shop the 50 bucks to sand and spray each light for permanent results.

Really that's the best solution. I just did the 3M kit because I had a little free time, my lights needed it, and I was concerned about baking them with clear coat on (no idea if that's a justifiable concern )

After I get done with my retrofit, I'll be having them professionally done.

 

I wouldn't worry about the clear coat after a couple weeks of being sprayed...especially if there was a flexing agent in it.

I never said my method was a permanent solution much less that ATF ruined 1/4 mile times. Nothing will last forever as long as it sees sunlight. Believe me, if I could find something that outlasted the life of most cars, I'd be applying for a patent. I'm sure my sealant will last at least 1 year with proper care. If the ATF works for you, by all means keep rockin' it. I'd be careful in getting fluids on your paint and trim, especially if you keep your car detailed.

 

Ive used other products from auto stores and nothing compared to 3m. For $18 bucks and an hour of time you get 80-90% clear headlights.

 

I have always been pleased with the blue magic headlight clear since mine aren't to bad. When they really need an overhaul i will be going with the 3M kit since everything they make is top notch.
