Wheel bearing, Shocks and SES light V.I'm starting to hate my car
So i decided to get a couple of things done on my car before the winter comes. The first thing i need to fix is the wheel bearing. Front passenger to be exact. I check for prices and the cheapest i could find it was at 230$ from a buddy of mine that works in the industry. The local garage is charging me 60$ to do it. Anyone knows of a place(online) that would be cheaper then 230$?
I also want my car to stop bouncing. I bought it used so I'm not sure how much "bouncy" is too much bouncy but this is just getting annoying. the body roll is getting to me too. Trying to find a fairly cheap solution. Not looking to lower just a nice comfy ride. What do you guys recommend? And lastly i keep getting the Service engine soon coming on. Last i check it was the P0442 code. The car runs great, no hesitation. The code is on like 85% of the time. the other 15% it just magically disappears. I know that a open gas cap would throw that code so since the first time it came up i close the cap and turn it a full clicking rotation. Still i get the light on. You guys think i should start by just changing the gas cap? Any and all help is very appreciated. You knowledgeable dude have helped me out in the past hoping the same this time. I'm starting to think it was a major mistake buying this car I keep getting problems with it. I love the drive, love the car but damn... i just want a reliable fun to drive comfy car. Hopefully after i fix this the only thing left in summer will be the brakes. Thanks |
oh yeah BTW it's a 2004 G35X

No love?

change you gas cap, buy better shocks/struts..wheel bearing is usualy pricey..good luck

Any recommendation on shocks and struts?

Maybe just find some KYB struts for a G35X online somewhere? probably run 600-800 bucks or something. Or maybe find some slightly used ones in the market place? Just make sure whatever you buy is for the X.

The cam position sensor seems to be a common issue w/ the check engine, SES and slip light coming on. Of course their are runability issues that follow. This could be the making of the dreaded CPS replacement. There are two of them and they are a little over $100 each.
Is your X riding on stock suspension or do you know if it's been replaced w/ other yr/model springs/shocks? There is a thread in the sedan section that deals in suspension. There are color codes for spring rates and identification for revised and unrevised shocks/struts/spring combos. the PO might have done some tweaking on your suspension improperly and possibly blew a shock or something of that nature. GL, rob.g As for the suspension... i have no idea if it's been changed or not. I just feel like the ride is too bouncy for my taste and i doubt that is normal. The shocks in the back are only 85/each for KYB. I might just start with changing th eback ones first. If I'm still not happy with it i'll change the front ones too. Is it necessary to change the struts too?

Yes the KYB shocks are nice i have them on my X, but im lowered. Bought them from THmotorsports.com for $102 per shock. Found them on tirerack.com for $85 per shock but they were out of stock and there was a 2 weeek wait last time i looked.

How many miles are on your G? Anything over 60K miles and you should be looking for new shocks. The rears typically go before the fronts.
Wheel bearings are expensive. You're lucky the labor is so cheap. The code could be a leaky gas cap. Inspect the cap seals and tank flange for obvious problems. Buy a new OEM cap if needed. The evap charcoal canister solenoid could also be the problem. Get under the car and inspect the canister vacuum hoses. The canister sits behind the rear passenger side tire, up in the 1/4 panel. |

As for the shocks yeah the car has a lot of milage... I'll go a head and change the rear first. |

If it's high mileage, you should do it all or else you may get some really funky handling.
