oil around spark plug

I have a 2004 G35 sedan with 105K. I am changing spark plugs. Everything going well until I took out my last plug (passenger side closest to firewall). The plug had oil around it and in the threads. The coil had a little on the very end of it. No oil leak on top running down that I can find. The car has been running well. I am freakin out. Anyone know what is going on? Thanks, Volintn

Search, there are many threads about it.

It's not that big of a deal.

Take a deep breath, dry the oil out, finish your plug change, and read this thread WITHOUT panicking: https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-cou...rranty-up.html

There are two solutions.
1) Replace the valve cover. ---> http://infinitipartsonline.com
2) There is a vendor that has the gaskets only. ---> https://g35driver.com/forums/vendor-...lve-cover.html

2 is the cheaper option.

But yes, as ^ mentioned, you really should search, there are abundant threads on the subject.

sounds like you might have a cracked valve cover or maybe you just need a new valve cover gasket.

blazeplacid 03-05-2011 11:34 PM

depends on how much oil was around the plug

I have a little bit but it wasnt any thing major.

I changed my plugs june 2010 and checked them in november 2010, no oil on the new plugs

Interesting, I did not know there was now a vendor that sold just the gaskets. Wish that were available when I had to change my driver side valve cover.

I do not have permission to access the above link - is there some kind of paid premium access this forum has?

NFSP G35 03-07-2011 08:32 AM

^Oops, I just did a search, I didn't notice that's in the premier members section.

Send a PM to R&D Factory
They're the ones that have the gaskets.

jimNC 03-08-2011 12:49 PM

Hmm. I wonder how the vendors feel that their products are only available to a subsection of those that visit the site - and I am guessing, a small subsection. I'm not saying the premium membership isn't worth it, I don't know any details about it. But from a vendor's position, that sucks.

^They're the ones that chose to put the thread there :dunno:

how long should it take for the valve cover rings to go bad?

5150DS 04-02-2013 01:08 AM

I changed my first set of plugs at 70k and had a pool of oil in one of the tubes. Fast forward to 160k when I changed the plugs for the second time. Very little oil, more like oil condensation. I have no problems and never gad a misfire. Basically, relax its no big deal. My car now has 170k.

83k and mine are still dry. Sometimes the dealerships may have some "bad" VQ's sitting around outback and some mechanics may let you have the valve covers for free. Something to look into.

I changed my plugs at 100k and only one plug was slightly wet. I'm at 138k now and have no idea what's going on down there, I'll check it at 150k I guess or when i'm due for new plugs.

i have covers that i got form infiniti a year ago , now with less than 10k miles and im wondering if one is leaking already

mikep415 04-10-2013 01:01 PM

I recently checked my plugs. Still good but one had a little oil at the end. cylinder 1. I'll be changing plugs before summer and see how it looks from there. Seems like the plugs were pulled out for the first time when i checked them. Car has 96k 05 sedan
