What's the best intake? .........no really?

:bowrofl:

....but wait, I'm serious :icon43:

....nah, but really. Not for "power" for sound.

Actually what I'm asking is based off of this:
I used to run a really really long tube intake, not for trying to get cold air or whatever, that's been proven moot on our cars, but just because it sounds awesome.

Well, after drenching a MAF ( yeah :icon43: ) I decided to take off the lower part that went down to the bumper, and just put the conical filter right on the end of the MAF.
This is fine, and still sounds pretty good (not as good as long-tube mode) but there was a problem... it made the drone on my coupe midpipe worse :banghead:
Now that I've switched to the Borla, ain't gonna lie, it does drone a little worse than the coupe middy. On the up-shot, it sounds waaaaay better just in general.
Thing is, I suspect if I went back to a long intake, it would quiet the drone a bit without harming the sound in general... problem with that is I don't wanna risk water in the intake anymore.
I know the oem ducting would probably be the absolute quietest, but it looks like absolute crap and has no intake sound at all.
I'm not super fond of the oem z-tube look, but if I absolutely have to I guess I could.
Mainly what I'm looking for right now is experiences from people that have run more than one intake without changing their exhaust setup and what causes less/more exhaust drone.

leaf blower mod, its a budget supercharger!!!!!! sounds great i promise......

pop charger sounds best imo, my buddy has a stillen and another local coupe guy has a centrifugal supercharger(the best intake i have ever heard! true story)

in the summer time i run the stock one because of serious heat soak 110 plus degrees here. exhaust sounds better with pop charger on in winter.

^LOL! You're right! I should get one of them funny lookin snail intakes :bowrofl:

G35Papa Jan 14, 2012 12:39 AM

Just add a cone filter to your OEM box...home made Stillen :D

I never paid any attention to before and after drone so no idea what it will yield you if done

HYDRUS Jan 14, 2012 12:48 AM

The stillen intake was proven to yield the most gains on Sexyrob's intake shoot out. Picked one up afterwards and it hasn't disappointed any expectations of being the best.I say stillen but wish i wouldve saved some money and tried G35papas way! lol

for an average male, 2000-2500 calories per day.

But of course you could have found that out from a simple search :D

CandlestickPark Jan 14, 2012 01:18 AM

I've had a Stillen, Pop Charger, Fujita and FuRookie intakes. Like Chris I haven't paid much attention to the difference in drone. The Stillen had the best sound IMO. Nice growl above 3K and it roars above 5K. The Pop Charger was pretty tame until upper RPMs and made lots of "hissing" noises when you hit the throttle. The Fujita and FuRookie were somewhere in between the Stillen and Pop Charger in terms of sound level.

you guys are soooo biased and discriminatory! Seriously :icon17:

If the OP was a noob, he would have seen the SEARCH post twenty times, a threat of ban, a dozen flame throwers, indications that Taliban was on their way, 72 goodfy post (like calory intake) and ultimately shunned from G35Driver for life.

I guess being Ashly has its privileges :p

redpearl99 Jan 14, 2012 01:27 AM

Bahahah, when I saw this thread I was gonna come in and ask you to ban yourself..lol

Yes, yes I do :bowrofl:

But it actually is a serious question. Every time a n00b asks this question, they've got the honduh ricer boi mentality that you can slap a CAI on your car, make 25+hp, and talk smack about 350Zs.
I'm asking about the correlation to exhaust drone (which apparently not many have noticed.)

...but yes, I'll admit to having quite a lot of fun making it look like a 'noob question thread' :D

dont kid yourself - the intake "sound" question has been posted so may times I'm certain it has been akin to exhaust... in reality intake is going to affect throatiness of engine and not so much exhaust note.

At any rate... there are so many variables that I dont think you'll get a reasonable definitive.

If performance isnt really a concern, any straight tube is going to give you a reasonably aggressive sound. There are plenty of polished tubes (short and long) as well as short CF and silicone... but sounding fast and being slow isnt as cool as being quiet and super fast :icon38:

SDGenius Jan 14, 2012 02:49 AM

get one of those carbon Roar intakes

G35SedanGrn Jan 14, 2012 02:53 AM

I run a stillen and a buddy of mine runs a stillen box with jwt popcharger filter and his sounds a little better than mine.

NjMatteSedan Jan 14, 2012 08:34 AM

Get the one BlueDream has. He loves it and it's not an intake you'll see often

5150DS Jan 14, 2012 09:07 AM

No filter ftw.
