Trans drain and fill
 

I just did a drain and fill at 142k and there were no metal shavings on the drain plug and the fluid was red with maybe a slight brown tint (very slight). It looks like the trans on these cars will last awhile.

Yeah, I drive 60 miles one way, so 120 miles round trip. I have done a drain and fill every 20k miles or so since the car was new (first and only owner). I drive it hard alot, but I work hard at proper/regular maintenance.

Better than rear diff fluid. :icon17:

How do you measures how much ATF has drained out?

Does the AT dip stick show a particular level and is that what you fill it back up to?

I take an empty gallon jug and, using a 1 cup measuring cup, graduate the side of it. I do quarts till I hit 3 quarts, then mark 1/4 cups. I pour my drained oil into the jug and replace the same amount I took out.

How does your tranny behave? Does it have a rough shift from 1st to 2nd? Is it a little rough into gear or is it completely smooth?

It is smooth. The only time it is rough is if I shift from p to d on an incline.

i did a drain and refill yesterday and exactly 2 liters came out :dunno: the car was flat too

Reviving an old thread. I know the general consensus is about 4 quarts come out when you do a drain/fill, but here in the snowy north we use the metric system. Is it 4 U.S. quarts that I should expect, or 4 imperial quarts? they differ quite a bit in volume.

I'm 95% sure the answer is U.S. quarts, but I know that the states go by the imperial system. Someone just clarify it for me quickly and I'll be on my merry way!

I would say about 3.5-4 US quarts, but the easiest I found to do. Drain the fluid cold or let it cool for several hours afterwards. Then just measure it out of whatever container you used and then pour back in the same amount.
