Sudden Stiff Steering

Sudden Stiff Steering
Took off for the store this morning, no issues at all. Make some turns at corners, no problem. Suddenly, turning left into a parking lot, the steering goes stffl like the car has died but, it hadn't. Got out with the car running, belt to the PS pump still there, PS pump still turning, no noise or anything. Plenty of PS fluid in the reservoir. Nothing under the hood would indicate out of the normal. Tried turning on/off, doing a couple of things, no change. Notice that when I turn the wheel, it is more noticeable going to the left. I have about an 1/8 of a turn either way and it seems normal. I also noticed turning stop to stop that as I turn the wheel there are points where it is stiffer than other points, almost like something is rubbing against the steering column but I don't hear any rubbing noise. Also I do NOT notice any sound from the pump that makes me think that it is straining more when it gets stiff. One other thing I noticed while driving home, that there were 3 or 4 times that after taking corners, a few seconds after straightening the wheel I could hear kind of a pop or clank noise that seemed to come from under and to the left of the steering column in the dash area.
Any thoughts folks?

Haven't changed the PS fluid yet but I went out, started it up and turned the wheel lock-to-lock 15-20 times, didn't even take the cap off the PS reservoir. Back to normal. I'm going to go ahead and change out the PS fluid sometime in the next couple of days.
So, other that a couple of black spots on my driveway where I left rubber from going back and forth, I'm back to good.
