Stiff/Rough Ride

The ride on my 03 g seems to be quite rough. I say seems because I am comparing it to my previous car, 07 Maxima, which may not be a fair comparison. The shocks and struts are stock and I believe to be original. The car has 109000 miles. Is the stiff ride a result of shocks/struts/suspension or is it the result of how the car was engineered and will just ride rough?

It shouldn't be too rough.. So you've checked for aftermarket springs? I have sport suspension and it's smooth. This being said... My last car was a wrx on coilovers which is not that smooth

It was in the shop last week having the transmission serviced and I asked them to check the shocks and the shop said they were fine. This seemed odd to me because I'm fairly certain that these are still the original shocks. I've taken a number of vehicles to this shop over the years and the owner has always been fair and done a good job so I trust his opinion.

I didn't know if the car was designed poorly and would naturally have a stiff ride or if it was something mechanical that could be fixed. But you are saying that after market springs could potentially fix the rough ride?

How are your tires they also can give you a rough ride.

Subiedrewbie 09-11-2012 10:13 AM

I'm saying aftermarket springs could be causing it.... Stock springs create a smoother ride in most cases. But that is a lot of mileage on original shocks. Might not be a bad idea to save up for some tokicos or other quality shocks. Stock wheel/tires? Low profile could affect quality of ride too

What type of tires are you using?

gyroslice 09-11-2012 03:38 PM

I've got Goodyear Assurance on the front and master craft on the rear. Everything is stock. Nothing modified.

You shouldn't run different tires front and rear.

My sedan is a sport, but I have z springs on it. If you looked at the springs, but didn't know what you were looking at, you would think it was stock. Maybe yours has z springs, which are much stiffer than even the sport springs.

Definitely agree with this, but that doesn't necessarily explain a rough ride. Could be the shocks but I don't think they'd feel rough with that many miles on them.

Im wondering if its on z springs with blown shocks, the mechanic peeked and saw no evidence of leaks and said they were fine.

gyroslice 09-12-2012 05:02 PM

the problem is truly frustrating. I've had two separate shops examine the shocks, tires and wheel assembly (there was a significant noise coming from the front right side which sounded like the wheel assembly going out) but each time they've come back, "we can't find a problem". I know there is something out of whack because in every other car I drive not super aware of the texture of the road like I am in my car.

Compression rod bushings do go bad all the time. Do you have snow tires in the rear?

gyroslice 09-12-2012 05:53 PM

what all will that bushing effect? will it drastically effect the ride?

Alan 09-12-2012 07:20 PM

check for swaybars. they make the ride more harsh.
