Roof trim failing
 

I've searched and never have seen a thread on this, but I'm sure it's come up before...

The plastic trim that runs the length of the roof on both sides that separates the center section from the arch piece that goes over the windows is going to hell. It's deteriorated in a couple of inch-long spots, exposing a flat metal wire piece and generally looking crummy.

Who's dealt with this? I assume it's a dealer-only purchase, right? How big a pain is it to replace?

Had this happen to me as well. I went to a junk yard and got a replacement for $50. It snaps in, but I used double sided tape as well to make sure it stayed in place. The dealership will charge you like $200 for it...Insane.

Thanks for the info. I figured it'd be too damn expensive from the dealer. I didn't know if this part would survive removal/reinstall from a donor so that's good to hear. Looks like I need to take a trip to the salvage yard.

Any tips on removal? Seems like a piece that would be easy to damage.

I lost one of mine a while back and couldn't stomach the price from the dealer. I ended up finding one in salvage yard. They do seem to use an adhesive to put it in there so I just pulled it off the salvage car with a flat head screw driver as cleanly as I could. I ended up using 3m weather strip adhesive to put it on my car.

That looks to be just the part the molding attaches to. See items 1 and 2 listed below the diagram and it says the price for the molding itself is $128.36.

Part 2 is the molding that I replaced after a part of the molding flew off at freeway speed

Sadly I have to bump this thread.

My roof trim on both sides are failing. I'm not sure which piece specifically I'll need to replace (if not all of them). The price however, is quite a shocker, but they are not available. Anyone know of another source (hopefully cheaper) where I can find replacements? I need the long pieces for both sides.

Sorry for bumping this again. Can anyone help out here? Search results not giving me much. Has anyone had these fail?

Should I just some kind of glue or adhesive on the underside rather than replacing the entire thing? If so, what would be recommended?

The 3m weather strip adhesive I used 3 years ago is still holding up great.

Not sure about the sedans but on my coupe i never had to use an adhesive to reattach the roof moulding. i just re finished mine recently and it is really easy. just strip the old paint/rubber coating off and spray with a primer and matte black spray paint. cost me about 15 dollars for the supplies and looks good as new.
