6-speed box won't come out

My 2005 G35 sedan needs a new clutch. I'm an experienced Do-It-Yourself mechanic, having replaced clutches on several models but never before on a G35.

All the preliminary steps have been done. Shifter removed, wiring disconnected, tailshaft support unbolted.

All the bell housing bolts have been removed. The two bolts near the top were difficult to reach, but they are out. At this point all the YouTube videos say, "just wiggle and the tranny slides backward and down." That's consistent with all the other transmissions I've pulled. Easy peasy.

This box won't come out! Is there a trick to it?

You mentioned the tailshaft support, but did you completely remove the driveshaft? I assume (since it's the biggest thing in the way) that you also pulled the transmission mount bracket (giant black one supporting the bottom of the tranny). Some pics of under the car might help? I did this job on my 06 sedan a couple years back so my memory isn't perfect, but I think there are also a couple bolts from the engine side holding the starter than need to be removed?

Yes, the exhaust system (everything downstream of the cats) is out, and the driveshaft is out.

Yes.

They are out, too. The photo with the original post has two bolts marked Starter.

I can move the tranny away from the engine about 1/4" but only with considerable force. Something is fighting back.

I read the Factory Service Manual and watched several YouTube videos. This one ...
... is especially good.

oh duh haha not sure how I didn't see that in your picture.

That is pretty strange, is the loom pulled totally clear of the transmission? I'd be pretty obvious if it was being stretched though so you can't really miss that. Slave cylinder removed too? My tranny came out without issue, so at this point I'm just guessing. Wish I could help!

I'll have to verify that. Whatever is preventing the tranny from coming out is at the top of the bell housing. Difficult to reach, impossible to photograph with my big-and-bulky digital camera.

Slave cylinder removed too?
Yes.

You have helped. Your mention of the loom gives me something to go after. Thanks!

What happened with this?

The bell housing has been moved away from the engine about 1/4 inch as seen at the bottom. The space is less at the top but there is a gap. That confirms that all bolts have been removed. Something is inhibiting further motion. Using more force risks breaking that "something." A harness? A bracket? Ideas? Suggestions?

I find no mention of a loom in the Factory Service Manual or any of the YouTube videos. Please elaborate.

What does it look like from up top in the cabin when you look through the shift assembly hole.? I don't know what would be hanging up it's basically just the shifter assy, the propeller shaft, the two wire harnesses at the back of the transmission and the crossmember.

In the original post I said all the bell-housing bolts had been removed. I was certain of that... and was wrong! One bolt, in a no-see position, had not been touched. When it was removed the tranny came out without difficulty. Lesson learned!

In some forums the Original Poster has the ability to mark the thread solved. Does this forum have a similar feature?

It turned out that one difficult-to-reach bolt had escaped my notice. It was at position "one o'clock" as viewed from the back of the car. When that bolt was removed the tranny came out easily.

Be patient! Good luck!
