Question regarding transferring TPMS to new rims...
Hello all,
I just purchased 05 18 inch sports rims (no TPMS, seller kept it for his new rims) to replace my stock 17's. I will be getting new Avon tires for the 18 inch rims. Now question is, how does the installer transfer the TPMS from the 17's to the 18's?
They would first need to take out my 17's and deflate it in order to get the TPMS right? Then they would mount the TPMS on the 18's and mount the new tires.
Now what's going to happen with the 17's? Do I provide them valve stems so they can inflate the 17's again? Or will they just hand me back the 17 rims and the tires separately?
Thanks all...

You may want to get your dealer to reset the minimum pressure on your TPMS system. When you put wheel sensors back on the same car they usually initialize on their own, but the system will still be set for the trigger pressure for the stock 17's. Assuming you are going to be running more than 30 psi in your 18's, you might want the trigger pressure raised up accordingly. I know the minimum pressure settings for various wheel sizes are in the service manual, but I don't have it on this computer. If you need it, let me know and I'll post it up her later.

I never thought of that. I just checked the manual:17 inch - 30psi, triggers low pressure at 25psi
18 inch - 33 psi, triggers low pressure at 28psi
Hmmm...I wonder if I really want it to be set. If I leave it at 25psi, that gives me 8psi and gives me a longer lead way.
I do check my tire pressure once a month so I don't usually run into this issue. But thanks !!!!!For all others that changed to 18 or 19's with your original TPMS, did you guys had the dealer reset it?
By the way, how they reset it? Is it done on the computer? Or anyone can tweak it when they remove the valve stem w/TPMS ?

If I were you I'd bump it to 28 psi, you'll get more warning if you get a slow leaker - might save a tire or wheel. Don't make a special trip, just have them do it next time it's in the shop for an oil change or whatever.
