G's AWD vs Audi's Quattro
 

Does anyone have information regarding how the 2007 G's AWD system compares to Audi's Quatro?

I ordered a G35X and I'm expecting it in a about a week. I know that the G35X is rear wheel drive unless it need to move move power to the front wheels which it does automatically which is great but I thought that by pressing the snow button you lock in AWD. As mention in previous threads the AWD is only locked in until you reach something like 12 mph and then goes back to rear wheel and shifting power around where needed.

I'm not sure how well that works rather than having AWD locked in constantly.

Any opinions on how your G35X handles in snow would be appreciated.

Well, if it snows outside and you lock the AWD system via the Snow button - where is the problem? I certainly wouldn't want to have it permanently on as it just sucks more gas...

It's besically AWD on demand - can't get better than that...

You will love it , it is fantastic in the snow and I never lock it into snow mode. The awd system on the X will provide traction whenever it recognizes any slip or loss in traction at any speed. I have never had a need to lock it in snow mode, you do not need it.

I have a G35x on order but no experience with it in snow yet. Our salesman explained the all wheel drive like this. 0-10 kph awd then it changes to rwd. In snow mode it stays in awd until 30kph. I'm not sure how accurate he is, but that is what he explained to me.

That is the best thing about ATTESA E-TS, is that it is not a constantly locked AWD system. You get the handling attributes of a RWD car with the traction of an AWD car, plus better MPG.

Google ATTESA E-TS, there are a bunch of articles about it.

The version used in the Skyline GT-R is called ATTESA E-TS PRO, but it is hydraulic rather than electro-magnetic and it has Active-Rear LSD. The computer can shift power from left to right in the rear.

VLSD in normal ATTESA E-TS is not computer controlled.

Hopefully in about a week I can give you a full report. I currently own a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro and absolutely love it. I put winter tires on it and I look forward to each and every snowy day as the car is so much fun to drive on bad roads, it also is a joy on nice summer days too! I thought about buying a second A4 but wanted to have some variety in my garage (and a G35X represents a little better value).

It really comes down to one thing, TIRES. You put a good set of snow tires on any car and you'll have very little problem. I have done it with a BMW and my '03 G and never got stuck and I live on a hill. Both were rear wheel drive. I will be putting on snows on my '07 Sport.

Tires are the key even an SUV won't do crap in the snow without the right tires.

can you turn vdc off in X? i did not check that when i ordered mine

I'm pretty sure you can. It's the left-most switch of three to the left of the steering wheel.

I took my G on a short AWD check a few nights ago when there was snow on the ground. The AWD system along with the traction and vdc really has to be abused to loose the car. Even swaying on the road with the snow button on i could feel the car trying to correct whatever it could and doing a good job at it. I can imagine a sport would be similar as far as handling most conditions. But the AWD is nice to have for the really really bad mornings. And yes there is an off switch for the VDC on the left hand side of the steering wheel.

I had owned an A4 before and I loved the AWD system. As in the previous thread, I too look forward to snow days so I can go out to play. In my G35x, I need to be more careful. There is a difference between mechnical vs electronic AWD system. I would say when there is heavy snow, A4 would be my choice. However, my G35x has better pickup.

Yes you can. And we've had lots of snow when we first got ours. I did use snow mode all the time. The car worked awesome. roads were bad and I could do whatever I wanted. Didn't think I needed snow tires cause the cheap OEM's were working good. But then I broke down and got some toyo Garit KX winters. A new performance winter. Now I'm just waiting for another dump of snow. You'll be happy.
