I'm bored - just a thought...

With all these horror stories we've been hearing here lately about fobs dying and people being left stranded, a thought acrossed my mind:

Instead of installing a stupid fob port that does not seem to work properly anyways, why not create a hidden backup ignition slot where you can stick your regular key and start your car in a traditional fashion in case your fob fails...

Just a thought...

This would be a good idea, assuming that Nissan installed a chip in the standard key as an immobilization device. Right now, they don't. The immobilization equipment is in the fob.

With this key slot, you would be stepping back in time before this technology existed. This backup ignition slot would make it easy to steal our cars, like it was easy to steal cars back in the 70's.

With the valet key on the older models you can start the car, so I doubt doing something similar with the 07' key would be too problematic.

That's a good point, but still, I feel highly insecure being stranded somewhere without the ability to start the car. Imagine pulling over in the AZ desert for a pee break and some stretching and not being able to start the car again.

That's basically what the original I-Key system is like. It has an ignition knob instead of a start button - like a ignition switch, but with a flapper valve hiding the key slot. If the fob battery dies, you put the hidden fob key in the ignition knob slot, just like a regular ignition switch. The key has an immobilizer chip in it.

I'm really surprised at all the reports of I-Key fob problems with '07's. As far as I know it's the same fob as my '05 and I haven't had any issues at all in almost 2 years.

I hear you Daniel. I did not get the I-key with my 05 G35 because I was worried about problems. But, never heard of any. Now these key issues are popping up with the 07s, it's a bit scary.
