It's official - new tires after 9,800 miles

There's been some discussion on how long the stock Sport tires will last - in my case, 9,800 miles. I knew they were getting there, but yesterday while washing the car I found the rears down to the tread bars. With all the rain we've been having here, bad tires on the rear is not good...

I don't usually get great mileage from tires anyway, which comes from flinging cars around corners etc., but was a bit surprised by this (so was the wife, especially when I told her we can expect new tires once-a-year :D). Anyway, for those wondering about their own, basic usage for this set was:
  • I don't particularly spin tires off the line, but have also found that the G is a bit tail-happy in corners
  • Lots of hard cornering - that's why I bought the car!
  • One track day, which I'm assuming took off at least a couple thousand miles

The rears were at the bars in the middle, the fronts were worn on the edges, middle was okay. Interestingly, the left front was more worn than the right, trying to decide if that's because the track had more high-speed rights (don't think so...?), or it's an alignment problem. Wasn't a major diff tho.

Good luck!

Regarding the left, worn more than the right... and then mentioning the track event with right sweepers is most certainly the culprit.

I ran Roebling Road years ago in my `03 Zed, and didn't cross rotate my V700s after the first day... by the end of the weeked my left front tire was SHOT. (Roebling is a predominantly right turn course). :)

I might be wrong so excuse me but, you are either running the hell out of those tires or you have defective tires. It's got to be one or the other. I mean I got 15k on mine, and if your G gets a bit tail-happy thats hard driving, at least mine only got tail-happy when I punched it.

^I think he answered that with the information about how hard he drives the car.

If i am not wrong even tires are covered until 12k miles. Check with infiniti or tire manufacturer. If i was you i will try to get a new set for free.

Eh...if I was the dealer, I would say (correctly) that the tires are worn, not defective. Anyway, these were half-price, I got four new tires when I bought a replacement set of wheels (don't ask, it's a long story about replacing a wheel and being unwilling to spend $750...the net is that after selling the other wheels, the replacement wheel cost me $200, and the tires cost me $500)

BTW, I don't consider that I drive "the hell out of the car". I drive it fast, because that's why I bought it; but I don't do donuts, or try drifting, or other stupid crap like that. Spending money on safety equipment, like tires and brakes, just comes with the territory.

To be honest, I really respect your answer here. While most people would try and get tires replaced under warranty and blame it on the tires themselves, you attribute it to your driving style and state that it comes with the territory. To me, I think that speaks volumes about your character. :) You are obviously enjoying your G, and that's all that matters. :D

Thanks Shane, I sincerely appreciate that.

That's actually pretty good if you had a track day and drive aggressive. 9800 miles is great in my opinion, I think most owners should have fun when they drive their G. Thanks for the info!

thats normal, since most freeway's on ramp/off ramp r right turns. drivers side tires usually wear a little faster, with the front left being the most obvious.

heres mine at 5.6k miles, still looks like it has 80% or more left on em.

might want to check your alignment to see if its off. that might be one of your prob causing it

wow only 9k? i am expecting a lot more out of my tires. i hope at least. i just dropped the car, so i know that wont help. Did you put the same tires as your replacement or did you go for something else?

Same tires because they came on the new wheels, and I didn't particularly dislike the Potenzas. Will likely put Pilots on next round.

giorgios Jan 13, 2008 11:22 PM

we dont have a big choice in tires. why is that? only if we can get the hydroedge tires on our car. i had them on my previous car and they would stick to the ground.

ckp Jan 13, 2008 11:25 PM

i am looking to put on tires after my stock one's are worn out, that give me good performance, and also much better tire wear then the first set of tires. I mostly care about tire wear, because i HARDLY drive my car hard, actually i basically never do...(what I call hard is, punching it every once and a while on a straight away for like maybe a hundred yards, and then slowing back down.
