2007 G35 wouldn't start today
 

I need to figure out if it is the battery or the key. I was hoping someone could lend me their wisdom. Here are the relevant facts.

1. No power in the car: lights, locks, windows . . . all dead. Two notable exceptions . . .

2. The security light (key inside the car on the dot matrix display) blinks repeatedly, and the orange lights around the 'key port' blink when I manually insert the inteli-key. I also noticed the security light keeps blinking even after i've closed the doors.

3. I misplaced my extra key so I only have one. Haven't replaced the battery since I got the car about a year and a half ago, but the low key battery light hasn't come on either.

I"ll try to jump it when my wife comes home, but that won't be until later tonight. I welcome your opinions.

Even without the fob, the lights inside the car should turn on when the door is opened.
Something else must be going on

do you have a voltmeter you can use to check the battery? should be at least 12.5 volts.

i'm just guessing here but i would imagine there is a relay that senses if battery voltage is lower than a certain point and cuts power to the car to avoid damaging the sensitive electonics? but, there is probably still enough juice to light up the little security led and the key port led.

someone with more experience and knowledge will have to take it form here ..

good luck. if it's an 07, should still be under warranty. do you have AAA, the infinity service option or roadside assistance? even if someone you know has AAA, they will come help you with your car as long as that person is present and has their card on them. just found that out recently.

do you have anything plugged into the power sockets? chargers, radar, etc?

dumb question -- how do you jump a push-start car? Just the same ole' way and then hit the start button?

did you call up roadside assistance?

The only cars that can be push started are ones with manual trans.

All our cars are push start, he meant the START/STOP button vs the traditional key ignition.

I'm pretty sure you do the exact same process, but instead of twisting the key you just hit the button. The push start cars will try to turn themselves over and hold the ignition just like you can do with a traditional key.

But my original statement still holds true.
The hydraulic torque converter in the auto transmission will not allow the engine to be driven by the wheels.
Hense you cannot push start an auto.
Only very old cars with auto tran allow a push start.
Now I'm no expert by any means but this theory can easily be backed up by any mechanic or gearhead.

wait - you mean by physically PUSHING the car you could get it to start on older cars?

Yes. From some 50's models and earlier.
But it would need to be far faster than any person could puch it.
Here's the whole explanation.

In some older vehicles that had hydraulic pumps in the rear of the transmission it was possible to push start them.
When the driveshaft turned the output shaft of the transmission, sufficient fluid pressure could be developed to cause the reaction devices to engage and pump enough fluid into the torque converter to allow the converter to turn the engine.
The vehicle would normally have to be pushed 35 mph or so in order for this to occur.

Acctually you dont need to go that fast. I have done this many times before, affcoarse not with my car but like you said older cars. i also found these videos on youtube .
