does the V36:VQ35HR still suffer from the oil in spark plug tube issue?

Just recently picked up an 07 g35x, coming away from a 2012 cruze, and 03 350z. Now I remember the old oil in the sparkplug tube issue in my 35de. Now I've searched around, found countless threads on this issue be it this website, alongside Nico, and others... and I know its a very prevalent issue in the vq35de's, but I couldn't find anyone posting issues specifically stating their v36 with this issue, rather than assuming and tearing apart my new purchase right away, is this common knowledge that the hr is not affected by the poor design of the de valve cover and grommets? Am I rid the oil submerged coil pack? Anyone have enough mileage on their 3.5 v36 clock, and did their own sparkplugs?

Thanks in advance, and see no problem with using this site as my main portal of information and info contributions. Looks good guys

From what I've seen here, it has not been an issue, at least certainly not to the extent of the earlier engines. Here's a recent thread you may find interesting:

(That's after 110K miles)

Thanks for the heads up vqsmile! That's a potential +1 possible leak, its hard to go by only one persons account; however, after 100+k, a small amount of oil is a good sign.

That's exactly what I thought too. If it's only a trace or so at 110K, that's not bad at all.

Passenger side HR valve cover from CNS

I'm at 160K (257km) and I have puddle in my 2007 G35x on cylinder 1. I temporary replaced coil boot and ignition plug to get rid of misfire code, while valve cover from cns (ebay) was in transit. Just got the covers in the door today. They look fine, besides a broken tab. Wonder what tab is used for?? It looks identical to the one on the right. If its for holding a crankcase ventilation hose, Im not making any big deal of it.

I actually just did the spark plugs in my '08 G35x yesterday, and only one spark plug tube had oil in it. It was on the passenger side, furthest plug back. I cleaned it out and replaced the plug, but I plan on doing the valve cover gasket at some point. I just kind of expected it at this mileage and age.

Changed my plugs recently, right around 120k miles, and didn't notice any oil in the pockets (or on the coil packs).

lightmeupper 06-01-2019 05:50 PM

Did you have any misfire codes as well?

dr_dangus 08-31-2019 08:51 PM

I did not. It was a little shaky at idle but no codes. I still need to replace the valve cover - it's been a few months and I haven't had any issues.

I had a slight miss on my 08' G35x at 125k so I changed the plugs and found a lot of oil in the rear passenger plug hole. Changed the gaskets and RTV'd the plug grommets like I do on the V35's and it's all good now.

dr_dangus 09-04-2019 11:46 AM

Do you have any pics of RTV on the plug grommet? I'd much rather do that than buy a brand new valve cover. And did you replace the coil or was that fine?

scumbagsleeper 09-04-2019 02:37 PM

I explained it at the bottom of this thread awhile back:

RTV on used valve covers

I changed my plugs first time today. Mileage at 106K miles. Just the slightest amount of oil on coil pack of firewall cylinder on passenger side. Nothing pooled up and no oil at the bottom. It was more like residue on the outer shell of the coil pack. Spark plugs were in perfect shape. I'll take a pic tomorrow and add to post.

bROKEN COIL BOOTS.

JUst got an 03 G35 With A blown head gasket ( combustion to water jacket in cyl #3. Started tearing it down today to replace and all of the coil packs broke off, in the oil tube. This may become self evident once I pull the valve covers.. (hopefully are removable on the head side) If so don't bother responding.. If not any advice as to how to get the old boot and spark plug out would be helpful... Thanks
