Two G's, a Merc and a pedestrian
 

So I may have written off not one but two near identical G's. driving to work just after 6:30AM.

Last few days we had a warm streak, lots of snow melt.Last night cooled off to just below freezing. Roads were'nt bad but still needed to be cautious. Driving at about 40k/h and the Mercedes two in front stops as a pedestrian all in black crossed the street. Mercedes stops, I think '12 G37 taps him and then my 07 35X proceeds to slide 30 feet right into the left rear.

Total destruction for the 37' I thought I was on, but after found the fender pinches the passenger door and the washer reservoir is shattered so I'm sure there is more hidden damage.

Neither of us had airbags deployed and the speed was minimal. I'm shocked at the damage from a fairly low speed accident. Pics coming soon, sad sad pics.

The odd thing is that while these cars are so incredibly well engineered to protect in a collision (as recently seen in numerous threads here), they are also so incredibly fragile at the same time, costing a small fortune if you even have a minor fender bender.

Exactly. Simple laws of physics. Car parts in the past have been more elastic, which causes more force on the passengers in the cabin when a collision happens because elastic collisions conserve kinetic energy.

The modern car parts are now inelastic, so they crush and bend and absorb most of the force to protect the passengers, hence parts easily bending and cracking.
