My X's transfer case starting to leak?

Is my X's transfer case starting to leak? I noticed this while under car changing F&R diff fluids this morning.

I still need to take it in to address ITB10-022 for the slight low speed vibration on hard turns from transfer case. This tsb replaces the $1K electric coupling in the transfer case without the temperature sensor.

does seem like a bit given that it doesnt seem to be run off from top from some other part. Best bet would be to clean it using engine cleaner and see if it returns to confirm if its a slow leak or just a run off form fluid fill up previously

While that clearly appears to be a leak, in all probability it only represents a few drops at best. It's truly amazing how little oil it takes to spread out and make a mess like that. Regardless, if you've got warranty coverage, I say use it!

wow,, two big ticket items go out like this,, I think I will have a closer look at mine,,,, since mine and yours were dang near built on the same day,, and bought and delivered the same week.....

Thats what i always do when i find such a small 'leak' is to clean the area with engine cleaner and see if returns and from where, hope this sorts out everything for you

btw was this covered under the elite warranty? Cause i have elite warranty too and a leaking steering rack that im not sure if its covered or not. Thanks

kool_yaar Jun 19, 2013 10:16 PM

^ nice to know... but the dealership here is full of ******* ppl and are very rude and dismissive when it comes to things being covered under elite warranty but now that i know they covered yours i can talk to them with confidence so thanks!

kool_yaar Jun 20, 2013 03:00 AM

^ perfect thanks!

edit: quick question, i seem to have misplaced my elite booklet they gave me with all the car info but im presuming that its not needed and they can pull up that i have elite coverage within their system through my VIN #, is this a correct assumption (that is if you know)? thanks

vqsmile Jun 20, 2013 10:27 AM

^^ I'd be shocked if they couldn't kool.

kool_yaar Jun 20, 2013 12:18 PM

^ ya me too but given my past experiences with them it seems like an easy way for them to hassle the customer lol

kool_yaar Jun 20, 2013 05:48 PM

Update: Well i took it in today and as a pleasant surprise the adviser last assigned to my account had been fired so it was a better experience customer service wise although the end results were less than satisfactory.

I told them that the rack was bad and needed replacement as diagnosed by the Nissan dealership close to my house and was quick to check and confirm that it would be covered under elite warranty that they pulled up with my name and would order the part which made me very happy BUT...

At that point the service manager stepped in and asked to diagnose the car themselves, they inspected underneath the car while lifted and concluded that the rack was fine and the leak was minimal/normal and it was actually the outer tie rod ends that need replacing (though there was no leaks or torn boots) and they would cover under warranty as 'good will' while still charging me $100 deductible and $130 for alignment which is NOT included under elite.

Anyways the tech seemed nice and 100% sure that it would remedy the clunking noise and the vibration at higher speeds and 'fixed' it and unsurprisingly on my drive back home i have the same issues though the steering does seem a bit tighter if anything... so im pretty much $230 out and still at square one

/end mini rant

Sorry for the thread jack treacherous :)

kool_yaar Jun 21, 2013 02:12 AM

Im glad your car is handling as good as new now and thats what im missing in my car right now, the car does not seem to track well at higher speeds like it used to... the new service team seems nice and much better than the last one so im keeping my fingers crossed ill update you on what they say next time i take it in which wont be easy given my schedule for next couple of weeks

kool_yaar Jul 1, 2013 07:26 PM

^ looking nice!

Update: So i finally convinced the tech to replace the steering rack and he was very helpful and what do you know the clunking sounds and vibrations are gone! :) Thanks Treacherous for all the info which helped me be confident in my dealings and get this done under warranty though had to pay for alignment, total of ~$250($100 deductible and about $140 for alignment :O) for a new steering rack with alignment aint bad given that elite warranty helped me save a good $500 on this repair.

Now got to replace my rotors and car should be as good as new!

kool_yaar Jul 1, 2013 10:47 PM

Im glad youre ok but you always have to wonder what was the driver up to when they cant see a stopped car right in front of them!! perhaps drunk or worse a daily careless driver i guess :/

when rotors are turned they usually last 6 months but with the experience i have had with all oem infiniti ones, i wouldnt expect more than 3mo imo which still isnt bad

kool_yaar Jul 2, 2013 08:46 PM

In that case you should be glad you were able to avoid any accidents cause expired tags would very likely mean no insurance which would have been a pain to deal.

About how many miles on these rotors? if they last ~40k+ then they are good for these cars given that its a heavy car and if you drive spirited at times. You are right about the pads, low quality ones can shorten rotors life for sure, i recommend getting good quality ceramic ones next time that are 'softer' on rotors, offer good stopping power and produce minimal brake dust

My R1s have lasted me about ~50k i believe and i might be looking to replace them soon
