Tinted tail options?

What options are there to tint the tail lights on the sedan?

Urbanengineer 01-13-2014 04:21 PM

You can paint em, use a tint tape, or buy bluebatmobile overlays. The overlays are so nice for the V36.

Good luck!

Painting looks best if done properly, here's my DIY for a GTR style painted taillight, and I can send stick-on templates if you're interested

Remove the tails and then get a spray can of Nite Shades and Clear coat. It'll turn out really good. Some good videos on Youtube if you search.

Vinyl overlays are not easy to install at all. I have applied tint to windows before but applying overlays must involve a whole different skill set because I botched my attempt--big waste of time and money. Couple coats of Nite Shade and clear coat is much easier IMHO.

Agree, my DIY that I posted above uses the Niteshades/clearcoat method but also has the barely tinted LED rings and side markers for the GTR look and shouldn't attract attention from the law compared to entire tail tint, also looks factory IMO.
I installed headlight & taillight overlays successfully but it's not an easy DIY, especailly if you've never worked w/ vinyl prior.

Painted tails (body color) look the best, do a Search there are several DIY threads showing you what they look like and how it's done...Gary

SofaKingAzn 01-14-2014 11:34 AM

Did mine with niteshade and got a local body shop to do a couple of clear coats on it. I feel like clear coats brought from store is not thick and shiny enough. I wanted the thick enamel look.

thegreatkwijibo 01-14-2014 12:30 PM

your best option is to not tint them.

Rinaldi 01-14-2014 01:51 PM

I have a white G with black wheels and the tails to me just seem to stick out.

Agree, the cans you buy from auto paint supply places for cut-in of door panels are a good clear coat for the tails, goes on thick and buffs to a factory shine, I used Dupont Acrylic Clear A-7480s, also good options are Evercoat Cut-in-Clear, Spraymax 2k cut-in-clear.
The Krylons, Rustoleums, etc aren't a good option for a pro quality job.

Yepp Avoid Krylons clear coat at all cost, I mean at all cost. I first did mine with the Krylon and the clear coat never seems to dry, after 2 weeks it was still slightly sticky and when it's hot out it's incredibly sticky. Then after I went with a duplicolor clear coat, it was a lot better. But at the end just gave up and Sanded most of the clear coat off for a body shop to do :P

saywat? 01-14-2014 07:16 PM

pls do not color match ur lights. it will look horrible

I don't have any experience with painting them but want mine easily reversible in the future if needed, or if I didn't like it. I got all my Vinyl from Don Nguyen (on lots of forums and here) since I knew the product would be good.

I did it myself and turned out real nice. Smooth and shiny. A little wavy texture on the surface up close but not noticeable to anyone really. Definitely cuts out some of the sharp red that was distracting to me. I used the lightest tint shade.

You definitely need a heat gun to get it to form around the sedans curves properly.

You can see the difference on the two sides below, then again on the right tail with the truck piece not tinted.

See, that looks good^
Its not ricey and with the black roof(props) it flows great.
Only thing I don't get is , how is the red distracting to you?!!?!!!! Lol

I've personally had my tail lights both tinted and then painted (which they currently are) and I love the painted look, but it really is all personal preference.

Thanks!! I guess when looking at the car the brighter red of the tail lights kept grabbing my attention instead of things like the wheels, stance, roof, etc...."distracting" :D
It just deepened the red tone to blend in better I think

Rinaldi 01-24-2014 11:40 AM

How are guys doing the roof wrap in vinyl? I was wanting to look into that as well on my white G.

G35DriverNC 01-24-2014 11:47 AM

.
I did the vinyl roof with a friend who used to do wraps on cars a while back. Honestly, I would probably take it to a pro shop next time. Even with the shark fin off it was a challenge due to the curve. Without a heat gun I would have stopped and peeled it off. A heat gun or HOT hair dryer is a MUST.

All in All it turned out great with only minor flaws. There were lots of little air bubbles (even after a couple days in sun and just popped with a pin to release any air or water (we did the wet application which is more forgiving)

I say just don't do it, unless maybe a very light shade, in which case it won't be noticable. Otherwise, IMHO it cheapens the clean look...

I see your in San Diego. Do you install as well? For me I would rather come over and have it all done.

Did you see the pics on page 1? My tails look factory clean and it IS a noticeable difference with the light tint. Nothing cheap about it. A quality product is a must though! The vinyl is very thick. Plus it's easily reversible if it want to change the look or sell the car stock!!

I did blue bat and just paid a tint place $25 to install them.

Here's a link with 4 pics from when I did it in 2008.

Hey guys,

I tinted my tails using nightshade and what I thought was clear coat, but I saw it was quick coat. The don't look too bad but they look dull, and I wanted them to be shiny. Should I wet sand again and then go over them in clear coat?

Lartytiejdke3 05-23-2014 10:39 PM

Try removing the tint and then not putting it back on again

No, he should dip his whole car then get gtr overlays. My car looks so good when people do that.

Lartytiejdke3 05-23-2014 10:45 PM

I would suggest a GTR front as well
